The Samaritan Shelter

The Samaritan Shelter Transitional housing for adults and families. Food Pantry. Soup Kitchen.

The Samaritan Shelter began in 1986 when two concerned people recognized the sharp increase in our local homeless population. Upon confirming this with the Pocomoke City Police Department and the Department of Social Services, discussions began about this growing crisis. Before long the seven Lower Shore Presbyterian Churches had formed a board to formally combat homelessness in this area. Through

the generosity of many area churches of differing faith as well as the Presbytery for Lower Delaware and Eastern Shore of Maryland, the board was able to purchase and renovate a house in Pocomoke --our current location.

Summer is often considered a dangerous time for people experiencing homelessness. With rising temperatures, extreme heat creates immediate risks of dehydration and heatstroke. Finding cool indoor spaces is vital, but limited resources and shelter closures during the day make survival difficult.

How to Help Those In Need

Donate Supplies: Consider providing items like frozen water bottles, sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and cooling towels.

Support Local Shelters: Many local shelters extend their hours during the summer and are in need of volunteer support and water donations to help unhoused individuals.

Direct to Resources: If you encounter someone struggling in the heat, you can direct them to local cooling centers or reach out to community organizations.

We thank you in advance for you kindness.

We are still collecting donations towards our Playground Pavilion. We thank you in advance for whatever you can do.

If you've visited our new website you may have seen our fundraising section for wish list projects. One of these projects is our Playground Pavilion.

A few years ago we raised enough money to purchase and install playground equipment for our resident children through a generous donation by a local business owner and our community.

This year, we would like to raise funds to purchase and install a pavilion for the playground to shade our children during play time and provide a few picnic tables for adults.

You can donate to this cause now at https://thesamaritanshelter.org/donations/playground-pavilion/.

As always, donations of this type are tax deductible.

We thank you in advance for your generosity.
