It might take us keepers some pain and two pairs of leather gloves to grab thistle but our giraffe eat it no problem! Giraffe has special cells in their mouth that are extra reinforced and their lips are super hairy and tough! This is because in Africa, many of the species of plants they eat have thorns and so they are protected from injuring their mouths. Here it means they can eat thistle as a special treat!

Zebra stripes have many functions. One of them is thermoregulation! The Grevy’s zebra live in a harsh environment so temperature control is very important for them. The black stripes on a zebra can actually become raised to absorb more heat on cooler days so that the darker color is more accessible to the sunlight!
