The Point Pleasant Borough Office of Emergency Management's (OEM) mission is to reduce loss of life and property in order to protect the environment from all-hazards (man-made and natural) and acts of terrorism, that occur within, or may affect, the Borough of Point Pleasant. This is accomplished through collaboration to build, sustain, and improve our capabilities to prepare for, protect against,

respond to, recover from, and mitigate hazards, by providing and coordinating resources, expertise, leadership, and advocacy through a comprehensive, all-hazards, risk-based emergency preparedness program. When OEM becomes involved in an incident, it is because the scope and scale of the incident necessitates assistance beyond local resources. During these events, officials from the Borough and County (and possibly State and Federal) are also involved along with nongovernmental organizations (NG0s), elements of the private sector. This mission is achieved through coordination and cooperation of various Borough Departments, Volunteer Units, regional partners, and other organizations that would have a role in any major emergency, ensuring that the efforts of all players are coordinated and synchronized to achieve the best results is the job of incident management.

There is increased confidence that some strong to severe thunderstorms may make it as far southeast as the I-95 urban corridor Saturday evening. The primary threat with any severe storms remains damaging wind gusts.

Hurricane Season officially runs from June 1st through November 30th, which means:

• OEM starts watching the tropics 👀
• Weather models become everyone’s favorite hobby 📡
• Bread, milk, and batteries mysteriously disappear from stores 🛒 (please don’t rush out just yet)
• And someone will absolutely ask if a storm in the Caribbean is going to hit Point Pleasant tomorrow 😅

The good news? NOAA is currently predicting a below-normal Atlantic hurricane season for 2026 due in part to El Niño conditions and increased wind shear. However — and this is the important part — it only takes ONE storm to make it a very active season for us locally.

As history has shown with storms like Irene, Ida, and Sandy, New Jersey’s biggest threats are often:
🌧️ Flash flooding
🌊 Coastal flooding & storm surge
🌪️ Tornadoes
⚡ Power outages
🚗 People attempting to drive through flooded roadways — and yes, emergency responders have conducted water rescues during storms to remove people from vehicles stuck in floodwaters. (Please don’t.)

A few important reminders as we head into the season:
✔️ Check your generators now — not during the storm
✔️ Review your emergency kits and supplies
✔️ Know multiple ways to receive weather alerts
✔️ Never drive through flooded roads. We really mean this.
✔️ Have a family plan for children, seniors, individuals with disabilities, pets, medications, and communication
Our team will continue monitoring conditions throughout the season and, as always, we’ll provide updates, preparedness information, and the occasional weather-related sarcasm you’ve all come to expect from us.
Stay safe Point Pleasant… and let’s all collectively agree not to post “we needed the rain” during a tropical storm. 🤝☔

On May 22nd, NOAA released the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Outlook. Forecasters with NOAA’s National Weather Service are predicting a below-normal hurricane season for the Atlantic basin this year. NOAA’s outlook for the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June 1 to November 30, predicts a 35% chance of a near-normal season, a 10% chance of an above-normal season, and a 55% chance of a below-normal season.

The agency is forecasting a total of 8-14 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher). Of those, 3-6 are forecast to become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 1-3 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5 with winds of 111 mph or higher). NOAA has a 70% confidence in these ranges. An average season has 14 named storms with seven hurricanes, including three major hurricanes.
