It's Friday, it's 5pm, and it's apparently International Beer Day! The first brewery in Virginia was right here at Jamestown and dates to the late 1620s, but colonists brewed beer for themselves before that time period. John Smith writes that while he was at Jamestown, โ€œsome malt the Indian corne, others barley, of which they make good ale, both strong and small.โ€ Foundations of the circa 1620sโ€“1650 brewery were uncovered in 1955 during excavations conducted by the National Park Service in the New Towne area of Jamestown.

One of the most common artifacts we uncover at Jamestown is Frechen stoneware Bartmann jugs, which were commonly used to store and decant beer! Learn more about Bartmann jugs at Jamestown at https://historicjamestowne.org/collections/artifacts/bartmann-jugs/

Hope you're getting a good brew this weekend! ๐Ÿป

On this date in history, July 31, 1777, one of the most remarkable allies of the American Revolution was officially welcomed into the fight.

The Marquis de Lafayette, a wealthy French aristocrat barely 19 years old, was commissioned as a major general in the Continental Army.

He had defied the King of France and risked his fortune and his life to cross the Atlantic, arriving in South Carolina in June 1777. His passion for the American cause of liberty was immense.

He journeyed overland to Philadelphia and presented himself to the Continental Congress, making a simple but profound offer: he would serve at his own expense and without any official command.

This demonstration of sincerity and commitment deeply impressed the members of Congress. They saw not just a zealous young man, but a powerful symbol of potential French support.

Though his commission as major general was initially honorary, Lafayette quickly proved his worth and bravery on the battlefield, most notably at the Battle of Brandywine where he was wounded.

He would go on to form a deep, father-son-like bond with General George Washington, who took the young Frenchman under his wing. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท

Lafayette's dedication never wavered. He became a brilliant commander and a crucial link to securing vital French aid, which ultimately helped win the war, especially during the decisive Siege of Yorktown.

He is remembered as a hero in two nations, a man who staked everything on the American experiment in freedom.

Led by Governor Sir George Yeardley, 22 elected burgesses joined councilors to form a single legislative body, empowered to make โ€œjust Lawsโ€ for the colony. For the first time, (some) settlers could participate in their own governanceโ€”a radical shift from military rule to one based on law and consent.

The Assembly addressed everything from trade and religion to moral conduct and relations with Indigenous peoplesโ€”๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ข ๐˜ฑ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต ๐˜ง๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜บ in North America that continues today.

A perfect blend of my favorite topics, history, tropical meteorology and stats.

This one is the trifecta!

On this date in 1788 history will remember George Washington's Hurricane that struck Hampton Roads. The track is noted as being similar to that of the great Chesapeake-Potomac Hurricane in 1933.
