It's the beginning of harbor seal pupping season!

To give these little ones a safe space to start their lives, the pupping areas are closed from March 1 through June 30. Drakes Estero and Limantour Estero are closed to all water activities such as kayaking. Double Point and the eastern side of Hog Island are closed to all human access.

Please help protect the seals by respecting the closures and staying at least 300 feet away from any harbor seals you might see outside of the closed areas. Harbor seals are very timid around people and will retreat into the water if disturbed, which could lead to moms and pups becoming separated.

Help us get the word out: never pick up a seal pup! Although seal pups may appear abandoned, they are most likely waiting for their mother to return from a feeding trip. If you are concerned about a particular seal, contact park staff or call 415-464-5100.
