Today marks the first day of paramedic school for our very own Full Time Lieutenant, Brice Hibbing!

Brice’s journey with Polk City Fire Department is a true testament to dedication and hard work — rising through the ranks from Paid-on-Call Firefighter all the way to Full Time Lieutenant over the last 16 years. Now, he’s taking the next big step in his career by enrolling in an accelerated paramedic program, a joint venture between DMACC and Des Moines Fire Department.

This commitment to advancing his skills and education reflects exactly the kind of dedication that makes our department — and our community — stronger.

Congratulations, Deputy Chief Tanner Owen!

Did you know that our Deputy Chief, Tanner Owen, not only serves the citizens of Polk City, but also serves the citizens of Des Moines as a full-time firefighter?

Today, Tanner was officially sworn in as a Fire Engineer with the Des Moines Fire Department. This achievement reflects his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to the fire service.

We are incredibly proud of Tanner and all that he has accomplished. He is a true servant leader who sets an outstanding example and serves as a mentor to many young firefighters.

Last night, Polk City Fire Department members trained on the vehicle fire prop at the Iowa Fire Service Training Bureau.

Crews practiced scene size-ups, initial roll-ups, hose deployment, fire extinguishment, and engine company operations. Training in realistic live-fire conditions helps ensure our firefighters are prepared to respond safely and effectively when vehicle fires occur in our community.

Tuesday night’s training focused on boat operations, water rescue, sonar operations, trailer backing, portable pump operations, and gator operations. Training on the water is critical for our department, as the Polk City Fire Department responds to emergencies on both Big Creek Lake and Saylorville Lake.

Water rescues require specialized equipment and regular training to ensure our crews are prepared when emergencies happen.

Our current rescue boat is more than 20 years old, and we are actively working to raise funds for a replacement boat that will better serve our community for years to come.

It was a beautiful evening on the lake and a great opportunity for our members to continue building and sharpening these important skills.

Today we celebrate Brock Mulder on his 1-year full-time anniversary with the Polk City Fire Department!

Brock joined the department in August of 2024 as a paid-on-call paramedic and quickly demonstrated his commitment to the fire service. He earned his Firefighter I certification in March of 2025 and was hired full-time shortly after.

In his first full year, Brock’s dedication and work ethic have already made a strong impact—earning him both Firefighter of the Year and Medic of the Year for 2025, as voted by his peers.

Congratulations, Brock, on this milestone and thank you for your continued service to the Polk City community!

Today we celebrate Lieutenant Brice Hibbing on his 15-year anniversary with the Polk City Fire Department!

Brice began his service in 2010 as a paid-on-call member and has since become a cornerstone of our department. Over the years, his dedication and commitment have not gone unnoticed—earning Firefighter of the Year in 2022, Officer of the Year in both 2023 and 2024, and Dedicated Member of the Year in 2024 and 2025.

In April 2023, Brice was promoted to Paid-on-Call Lieutenant, a role he continues to excel in while supporting and leading those around him. In March 2026 he was promoted to a Full-Time Lieutenant. Around the station, many refer to him as the “mascot” of the department, a testament to the energy, personality, and pride he brings to the team every day.

Thank you, Brice, for your continued dedication, loyalty, and service to the Polk City community. Congratulations on 15 years!

Last night, the Polk City Fire Department trained on pumping and drafting operations. Training began with reviewing the mechanical function of a fire pump before crews moved into hands-on evolutions focused on roll-up drills, hooking hydrants, flowing handlines, operating master streams, drafting operations, and pumping the brush truck.

With many miles of our jurisdiction not covered by fire hydrants, it is critical that our firefighters remain proficient in drafting and rural water supply operations to ensure we can provide effective fire protection throughout the entire community.

First day of school photo: Our very own Paid-On-Call member Jaron Johnston is starting EMT class today. Jaron joined the department in January, is just finishing up his Firefighter 1 certification, and beginning his EMT journey at DMACC! Good luck Jaron!
