Currently there is an effort underway to repeal property taxation in Ohio, several hundred thousand signatures have been gathered and we should find out in a few weeks whether or not enough valid ones were collected to get the issue on the ballot. Up until now we have not spent a lot of time covering this issue, so today we will begin by sharing a high level breakdown of where your property taxes are going in Meigs County. As you'll see, it varies depending on where you live and what levies voters in your area have passed.

As a side note, there are a fair number of property owners in Meigs County that apparently don't feel the need to pay their property taxes in a timely manner. If you are one of them, we would sincerely appreciate it if you would get off the wagon and help the rest of us pull! The hills are kinda steep around here.

Special thanks to Treasurer Tonya Griffin and Auditor Mary T. Byer Hill for their respective roles in creating this document.

Anyone who has been subjected to watching TV "news" in the last 45+ years probably has heard the line "America is in economic decline compared to the rest of the world" so many times that many of you might've even believed it. But here are the facts:
In 1980 the US accounted for about 25% of worldwide nominal GDP
In 2025 the US accounted for about 26% of worldwide nominal GDP
Those numbers have remained largely the same during the intervening 45 years- some years slightly higher and some slightly lower.
Care to guess who really is in decline? During those years, the European Union went from over 28% in 1980 to only 14% of worldwide nominal GPD in 2025. Funny how often we've heard Elitist Democrats say we should be more like Europe.
Guess who else declined? Japan. Those of you who are over 50 surely remember all the doom and gloom from the 1980's about how they'd overtake us. Be honest, how many of you fell for that BS at the time?
In 1990, Japan accounted for 14% of worldwide nominal GDP.
In 2025, Japan accounted for 3.5% of worldwide nominal GDP.

Maybe it's bc bad news sells or bc people need a Boogeyman but how many times does this tired old "news" story have to be run before Americans call BS? In the 1950's the Soviet Union was going to overtake us after Sputnik. How's the Soviet Union doing these days? In the 80's it was Japan and you saw how that turned out. In the 2000's it's China China China despite the fact their economy and real estate market has been in the toilet for most of the last 5 years, their total gov+corp+consumer debt likely exceeds that of the USA, their paranoid leader has purged almost the entire military leadership, and their ruling officials are so corrupt that they make Hunter Biden look like a devout, pious monk.

As part of our celebration of 250 years since the signing of The Declaration of Independence, State Representative Kevin Ritter will be giving presentations here in Meigs County about the founding of our great nation. You would do yourself a huge favor by sitting in and listening to his remarks. He is very knowledgeable about this critical time period and does an excellent job of providing context of what was going on at the time and how those experiences and realities impacted the decisions of the founders of the United States and framers of the US Constitution.

For years Democrats have pushed hard to raise oil and gas prices by attempting to ban hydraulic fracturing, stopping pipeline construction, and wanting to add a "carbon tax" on fossil fuels. Now they fake their outrage that oil and gasoline prices actually went up when that's exactly what they wanted all along.

On a related note, President Trump's blockade of fossil fuel imports into Cuba is over 3 months old and now the island is just about out of fossil fuels. Environmentalists across the globe must be cheering! With the huge abundance of wind & sunshine in Cuba, we will soon find out what a society that runs completely on "free" Chinese manufactured wind turbines & solar panels looks like. Per capita, Cubans only use about 1/10th as much electricity as Americans so they should have no trouble doing this. My goodness, they should have plenty of "free" electricity left over to build some data centers too!

Finally, it seems a bit odd that Iran claims that they desperately need clean nuclear power for electricity when it too receives FAR more sunlight than most of the United States. Strange that you NEVER hear the so called progressives in the USA demand that all Iran really needs are more Chinese made solar panels.

Hmmm....maybe broker a peace deal where Iran agrees to let the USA dismantle their nuclear program, then allow Iran to sell all their oil to China in exchange for solar panels to power the entire nation with "free" electricity. With Iran's ongoing internet blackout they won't need any new data centers anytime soon, so this should work.

This could win the Nobel Peace Prize!

W/ control of the US Senate on the line this Nov. we thought we'd take a look at some of the competitive seats around the country. Longtime Senator Susan Collins of Maine will be challenged by the newest Leftwing Flavor of the Month, Graham Platner. Mr Platner has come under fire for his (now covered up) chest tattoo of a N**i Waffen SS Deathhead skull and bones. He claims he got it while drunk while stationed in Eastern Europe in the early 2007, though never got it covered up until last October.

However, he was not able to cover up his 1,800+ posts on Reddit from 2009-21 which explained his views on a wide range of topics including,
Sexual Assault: He wrote that victims should "take some responsibility" and avoid alcohol to prevent attacks. Wonder how that will fly w/ the "Me Too" Anti-Kavanaugh crowd?
Rural Voters: He claimed that white people living in rural America "actually are" racist and stupid. Wonder how that will go over in mostly rural Maine?
The Military: He called U.S. Army soldiers "fat, lazy trash". He also faced backlash for allegedly mocking a wounded soldier. Wonder how that will go over at the local AmVets&VFW's?
Law Enforcement: He agreed with statements calling all police officers "bastards". Wonder how the Fraternal Order of Police endorsement interview will go?
Offensive Language: He frequently used homophobic slurs and derogatory terms for people with mental disabilities. Stay tuned to find out if Democrats actually care about either of those groups when it comes to supporting him.
Political Views: He previously referred to himself as a "communist" and a "socialist" Wait a minute, weren't the N**is supposed to have been strongly Anti-Communist??
So you might think this clown would be booed off the stage by so called "progressives" but nooooo. He is in fact. their latest darling. Elizabeth Warren calls him "the real deal" and believe it or not Senators Bernie Sanders and Chuck Schumer (who are Jewish) are actively supporting his campaign. Guess they actually believed him when he said that he had no idea for 18yrs.that his tattoo was a well known N**i symbol...not to mention all the other well documented comments that he made in the years after he requested it.
Make no mistake, the Left's support of this guy shows you their true colors. What's even worse is that there is a very good chance he could win. Maine's Geezer Democratic Governor Janet Mills dropped out of the race b/c the base of her party is actually buying the scam that he's selling. We'd like to believe that voters in Maine would know better, but as Thomas Jefferson said, "the government you elect is the government you deserve"
Now stay tuned for all the Democratic Party mental gymnastics explaining why he's actually a statesmen, great American, overcome adversity, and just what is needed in the US Senate...
Frankly, Maine would be better served by selecting a random name out of the Middleport, Ohio phone book than electing that guy.

Memorial Day is a solemn day of remembrance dedicated to honoring military personnel who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, particularly those who died in battle. As you remember those who served our country, also consider that many of those who survived combat had wounds and scars that never completely healed. The cemeteries at the former state mental hospital grounds in Athens provide us with an ongoing reminder that many of those wounds were more than physical🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Thursday the DNC finally released its "autopsy" of the 2024 Presidential Election. It is truly remarkable both for what it says and what it does not mention. Among the highlights, it blames the Biden Administration for not effectively helping VP Harris improve her standing over the 3.5yrs she was in office, prior to the last minute swap. It also says they didn't effectively drive up Trumps negatives.

As if that wasn't enough BS, nowhere does the report mention Biden's age and feeblemindedness which ultimately is what allowed DNC insiders to push him aside after the famous June 2024 CNN Debate. Also, the autopsy never mentioned the huge divide within the Democratic Party over supporting Israel and the war in Gaza.

On the other hand, the report criticized Harris' outreach to key segments of America while condemning the party's focus on “identity politics.” -TRUE!
One last point it made was this: “Harris wrote off rural America, assuming urban/suburban margins would compensate. The math doesn’t work,” the report says. “You can’t lose rural areas by overwhelming margins and make it up elsewhere when rural voters are a significant share of the electorate" That is 100% spot on but you'd think they would've figured that out a long time ago.

Perhaps the biggest head scratcher though is WHY it took the DNC 18 months after their 2024 train wreck to release "the autopsy"? We have no idea, but it sure is fun to watch several top level Democrats now calling for the DNC Chair Ken Martin to resign immediately less than six months before the Midterm Elections. They certainly do know how to eat their own...in public.

We've written several times about polling results on this page in recent years. In Ohio, springtime polls have a tendency to favor Democrats just enough to give hope to their base. Sound familiar? In recent weeks, Democrats are citing several polls showing a tight race between Jon Husted and Sherrod Brown. Most polls are extremely close. Let's take a look springtime polling from recent Ohio races, then look at the FINAL RESULTS.

This time in 2016 the Portman/Strickland matchup was projected to be a "marquee race" w/ Strickland leading incumbent US Senator Portman in nearly every poll. Despite all those "I Miss TED" bumper stickers around Athens&Columbus, Senator Portman won by over 20 points and carried well over 80 counties.

Also at this time in 2016, Democrats crowed about how they'd win Ohio and their numerous other pipe dreams of beating Trump by "expanding the map...blah blah blah!" How'd that work out for them? Trump carried Ohio by 8.5 points. Must've been the Russians!

We've written in the past about Mike DeWine defeating Rich Cordray in 2018, just as he did in the 2010 Attorney General's Race. Virtually all public polling showed Cordray winning throughout the year. So much for that "Big Blue Wave" huh?

Let's move into 2024. How was 48yr politician Senator Sherrod Brown looking at this time? He was leading in EVERY public poll. In fact, he did until October. He went down in flames though with 46.5% to Bernie Moreno.

So where does that leave Ohio Democats now? True to form, just like they did with TED in 2016 and Rich Cordray in 2018, the self proclaimed Big Tent Party of Diversity is re-running another defeated, old white geezer yet somehow expects a different result.

Over the last few days a small number of provision ballots from the May 5th Primary have been counted by the 88 county Boards of Election. These are typically ballots of Ohioans who were already registered to vote but had moved just prior to the Election Day-sometimes to a different county, sometimes with/in the same county. Since their address has not been updated, the polling location allows them to vote “provisionally” on Election Day but their ballots are set aside and not counted that night. They are delivered to the county Board of Elections to be reviewed to be sure they are registered, valid ID was provided, and otherwise valid then IF approved by the 4 bipartisan Board Members the ballots get counted.

On Election Day, results in Scioto County had Jay Edwards trailing by 4 votes. After several dozen provisional ballots were counted, he narrowly took the lead and has now won 78/88 counties. Congratulations Jay🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
