Village Residents:

Please note that the flood damage dumpsters at the Pomeroy Fire Department are FULL. No additional items can be placed in these dumpsters, as doing so will result in MSW refusing to haul them away. There are plans to bring 2 additional dumpsters back for village residents to use and there is an additional dumpster on Fisher Street, near Wolf Drive.

One thing that cannot be tolerated is the dumping of items outside the containers. As shown in the screen shots, this truck backs up to the container and leaves a tv stand behind for others to clean up. This is unacceptable and we ask the offenders to come place the item in the dumpster before we use a better camera shot for everyone to see.

All village departments are trying to help with the cleanup and recovery, but you must be able to unload your items in the dumpster, period. We have a nice area to have these rolloffs but will not allow for people to dump and run.

Friends:

Tomorrow and Tuesday, 9-28 and 9-29, Sycamore Street in Pomeroy village will be closed from 7am to 7pm. The closure is for crews to demolish a house on Sycamore Street and haul away the debris.

Barricades will be in place during the closure to alert motorists and all are asked to use caution in the area as this is the same intersection where the traffic light is flashing due to lightning damage.

We appreciate your understanding and apologize for this inconvenience as Sycamore Street is cleaned up for future construction.

Two Vehicle Accident
West Main Street, Pomeroy village

Crews responded to a two vehicle accident on West Main Street in front of KFC on Saturday morning. Personnel arrived and assisted EMS with the patients and controlled a fluid leak. EMS transported two people and returned to quarters. Firemen moved the vehicles off the roadway and reopened West Main to two lanes. A wrecker was summoned to collect each vehicle.

Responding was Pomeroy Pumper 1-Truck 1, Meigs County EMS, the Pomeroy Police Department, Get Hooked Towing, and Riverside Towing.

Unknown Fire and Smoke
Cycle Hill, Salisbury Township

Pumper 1 and Brush 1 responded to an unknown smoke/fire on U.S. 33, near Kingsbury Road. Upon arrival, the fire was near Peach Fork road. Crews turned onto Peach Fork and onto Cycle Hill and located the fire and property owner. The smoke was rising and going across 33. Crews made contact and found the fire originating from a burn pit. Crews gave information on calling ahead so fire personnel wouldn’t be dispatched before returning to quarters. No injuries were reported.

Grill Fire
Naylors Run Road

Pumper 1 and Pumper 2 responded for a grill fire with possible spread to the roof of house trailer in Salisbury Township. Pumper 1 arrived and found the fire contained to a closed grill. Personnel turned off the gas and used a water can to extinguish the fire. Pumper 2 arrived but was not needed and remained in-service while a report was completed. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

🚨🚨 STREET DETAIL 🚨🚨

This evening, personnel were on Wolf Drive and West Locust, between State Street and East Street, flushing mud from the roadway. Crews spend approximately 2.5 hours on Wolfe Drive and 1 hour on West Locust. Although some mud remains, the idea is to clear the roadway of debris and clear drains that may be covered after recent flooding. Crews will attempt to flush Mulberry Avenue on Wednesday, weather permitting!

Traditionally, we post a recap of the runs we go on because honestly it’s usually a one, sometimes two runs per day posting. Occasionally, a storm will push through and we might have a handful more than that. Yesterday, starting at 12:11am, department personnel began responding to calls starting with a transformer/tree in lines fire on Rocksprings and ending at 3:13pm with a tree in lines call on Long Hollow Road.

In all, department personnel along with our mutual aid partners from Racine, Syracuse and Middleport responded to 16 calls for assistance. Department personnel responded to calls on Rocksprings, Mulberry Avenue, Long Hollow, Laurel Cliff, State Route 7, State Route 143, East Memorial Drive, and Butternut Avenue. During the evening, multiple calls were often logged at each location, with many evacuations occurring via rescue boats or personnel reaching flooded residents via foot.

Unfortunately, on Laurel Cliff/Willow Creek there was a situation where it simply was not safe to put responders and flooded residents in a boat with swift water moving like it was. That is a decision that was made by the Incident Commanders, and I stand by their experience and decision. In those instances, residents were ordered to the highest level of their homes or to higher ground until water receded.

As a result of their dedication and expertise, 15 residents of Long Hollow, Laurel Cliff and Avenue Bridge/Route 7 were safely evacuated to a temporary shelter.

As we continue to monitor the forecast over the upcoming days, we ask all to remain cognizant of additional flooding events. Please plan ahead if you live in an area that’s been affected by the recent flooding. Residents can follow Meigs County Emergency Management Agency for severe weather events, flood assistance and shelter information.

My thanks to our dedicated first volunteer firefighters, police officers, dispatchers, EMA personnel, Red Cross volunteers and village/township/county/ODOT employees. The work you’ve done is greatly appreciated and we Thank You.

Due to the ongoing flooding and associated cleaning of the communities affected, department officials along with Eagles 2171 Sternwheel Committee members have elected to CANCEL this year’s parade.

Many roads are still water covered. Union Avenue near Avenue Bridge/State Route 7 is closed, Hiland Road near the UTV shop is under water, 733 near Forest Run is impassable.

State Route 833 is passable but very muddy. Please plan accordingly and don’t drive into water. Many places are experiencing high water and others that haven’t seen levels this high in many years.

Fisher Street, Pomeroy village

Pumper 1 and Truck 1 responded to a report of a tree down on a residence on Fisher Street in Pomeroy village. Upon arrival, crews found a large tree split, falling onto other trees and eventually landing on a house. The person inside was able to self extricate. As the outside stairs and entrance to the house were obstructed, fire department personnel cut the tree back for resident access. Crews piled up debris for pickup and returned to quarters. Also responding was the Pomeroy Police Department.

Smoke Detector Activation/Smoke Showing-Possible Structure Fire
Liberty Lane, Pomeroy village

Crews were alerted for a smoke detector activation on Liberty Lane in Pomeroy village. Pomeroy PD arrived and reported smoke coming from the front door. Ladder 2 requested a structure fire assignment so that personnel could have additional resources from stations 4 and 10. Ladder 2 arrived to find light smoke. Crews investigated and found a cooking fire on the stove. The pan had been removed from the stove and taken outside. A report was taken and crews returned to quarters.
