After hiring a contractor in 2018 to rebuild his wood deck and staircase, Stony Point resident Elvin was left with subpar work and years of frustration trying to get it fixed or refunded.

Affinity Fraud is when scammers create a false sense of familiarity to gain your trust and exploit it for financial gain. Even if a friend, family member, or community member vouches for the opportunity:

• Do not skip due diligence
• Verify the individual and company independently
• Check if the investment is registered with state or federal regulators
• Ask questions about risks, fees, and how returns are generated
• Be cautious if the person discourages outside advice or research

Treat every opportunity the same way you would if it came from a complete stranger!
