On September 30, Brent Lidgard, Solid Waste Coordinator retired from his duties here at SCOCOG. We wish him a long and enjoyable retirement!

Jenni Collins, took over the role of the Solid Waste Coordinator, along with her other duties.

On October 7, she attended the SWAB (Solid Waste Advisory Board) meeting in Jefferson City, where she met with her counterparts across the state of Missouri. They discussed the update to the Memorandum of Understanding for the Solid Waste Management District, Legislative Outreach in the spring where we would showcase our regions throughout Missouri, Paint Bill, trying to get it passed, and abandoned landfills in our state and future meetings for 2027.

Jenni is looking forward to working in the District to carry out the goals of the District which include:

Support existing recycling centers and recycling programs in the District.
Conduct district-wide household hazardous waste and electronic waste collections.
Provide support to recycling operations through training opportunities, technical assistance, equipment repairs, and educational programs aimed at increasing the amount of materials recycled while reducing the amount of waste generated.

Environmental work generates an overwhelming amount of data—field measurements, lab results, weather feeds, and continuous monitoring from treatment systems. The challenge isn’t collecting information; it’s transforming it into confident, timely decisions. As technology accelerates, stakeholders expect answers now, and the pressure to be faster and smarter keeps rising.

High‑quality decisions start with high‑quality data. That means clear planning, well‑defined data quality objectives, and consistent procedures to verify that the information you’re relying on is accurate and usable. But even the best data loses value if it’s trapped in disconnected systems. Effective data exchange—making information accessible, shareable, and trustworthy—is essential. When done well, it’s efficient, repeatable, and preserves data integrity. When done poorly, it leads to gaps, mismatches, and uncertainty about where the data even came from.

This seminar explores how to manage environmental data with purpose: how to collect it wisely, ensure its quality, and move it seamlessly across systems so it can actually drive decisions. Our expert panel will help answer questions like:

How do we overcome resistance to adopting digital field data collection, and ensure we don’t lose data when it’s collected digitally?

What are the considerations for data access, control and security when sharing databases across multiple agencies, platforms, and stakeholder groups?

What’s the best way to handle using several analytical laboratories, each with a different electronic data deliverable (EDD)?

Our company wants to invest in environmental data management. What’s the best place to start?

DNR informed us today they will be using the increase in tipping fees within the department, primarily for their wages.

🚨For Immediate Release:

Department of Natural Resources will adjust solid waste tonnage fees for landfills

Sanitary landfills and transfer stations will adjust from $2.11 to $2.18 per ton. Demolition and construction landfills will adjust from $1.40 to $1.45 per ton. The change does not modify local or county-level solid waste fees charged by county commissions or economic development authorities that are allowed under Missouri law.

E-waste doesn’t just disappear after disposal.

When not handled properly, it can release harmful substances into air, soil, and water, impacting both environmental and human health 💯

Recycling electronics responsibly helps recover valuable materials and reduce long-term damage ♻️
