USCG Auxiliary Flotilla 411 The USCG Auxiliary supports the United States Coast Guard by providing recreational boater safety courses and recreational vessel inspections.

Established by Congress in 1939, the 30,000 members of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary are "Semper Paratus", meaning "Always Ready". Vessel Safety Checks, Harbor Patrols, Recreational Safe Boating Courses, Search and Rescue Missions, and Marine Environmental Protection are just a few of the services provided by the Auxiliary. Flotilla 4-11 is established in Ponchatoula and services the sur

rounding areas. We meet at the USCG Regional Training Center in Mandeville, LA on the 2nd Monday of each month starting at 7:00 PM. Interested parties feel free to contact us at [email protected] for more information.

"Every year, the U.S. Coast Guard compiles statistics on reported recreational boating accidents. These statistics are derived from accident reports that are filed by the owners/operators of recreational vessels involved in accidents."

Some important highlights from report:

๐Ÿ›Ÿ Where cause of death was known, 81% of fatal boating accident victims drowned. Of those victims with reported life jacket usage, 83% were not wearing a life jacket.

โ–ถ๏ธ Takeaway message: Please always wear a life jacket when underway on any type of vessel, including paddlecraft. ๐Ÿฆบ

๐Ÿพ Alcohol was the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents.

โ–ถ๏ธ Takeaway message: Always boat sober -- operator and passengers alike. Alcohol and boating do not mix. ๐Ÿšซ

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿซ Where instruction was known, 75% of deaths occurred on boats were the operator had not received boating safety instruction.

โ–ถ๏ธ Takeaway message: Take an approved boating safety course before getting underway. โœ๏ธCourses are offered by the Coast Guard Auxiliary and other organizations.

๐Ÿ‘€ Operator inattention, operator inexperience, improper lookout, machinery failure and excessive speed ranked as the top five primary contributing factors in accidents.

โ–ถ๏ธ Takeaway message: Always have a proper lookout; take a boating safety course and know navigation rules; use all your senses when boating; only travel at proper speeds for existing conditions. ๐Ÿšค
