Ponder Volunteer Fire Department

Ponder Volunteer Fire Department Ponder Volunteer Fire Department is a not for profit organization dedicated to providing quality fire and emergency medical services to the community

Ponder Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1937 by residents of the Town of Ponder. The department started with 1 truck and a couple of dedicated members, and has grown to 6 trucks and 19 active members now. We strive through fundraising efforts to provide our members with modern equipment and training to provide the best possible service to the residents and transients in our district. O

ur members are assigned to shifts, which provide our citizens with a quality response, and allows our members to spend some time with their families. We require all members to attend weekly training throughout the year and ask them to give their time to outside training as well. We currently hold one major fundraiser per year. Frontier Days is held annually the first Saturday of June. Events are planned and ran by our members, the Lady VIPS of Ponder and other local residents. Thank you to those that support us both monetarily and with your precious gift of time.

🔥 Member of the Week 🔥

This week, we would like to recognize Firefighter/EMT Timothy Aja for his dedication, leadership, and commitment to the Ponder Volunteer Fire Department.
Timothy joined PVFD in 2020 as a volunteer firefighter and has continually worked to advance his skills and knowledge in the fire service. Through hard work and determination, he earned his Firefighter and EMT certifications and is currently finishing paramedic school, taking the next step in his career and furthering his ability to serve those in need.
In addition to his service with PVFD, Timothy works full-time for the Pilot Point Fire Department, where he recently completed his probationary year. Despite the demands of a full-time fire service career, Timothy continues to dedicate his time to PVFD as a part-time firefighter, demonstrating the same commitment that many of our members show in serving multiple communities.
Timothy's impact on our department extends beyond emergency response. This past fall, he took the lead in developing and conducting PVFD's first Volunteer Training Academy. Through his efforts, new members were provided with valuable training, mentorship, and a strong foundation for success in the fire service. His willingness to invest in the next generation of firefighters has already made a lasting impact on our department.
Whether he's responding to calls, mentoring new members, training alongside his fellow firefighters, or continuing his own education, Timothy consistently exemplifies professionalism, dedication, and a servant's heart.
Please join us in congratulating Firefighter/EMT Timothy Aja as this week's Member of the Week. Thank you, Timothy, for your hard work, leadership, and unwavering commitment to PVFD and the communities you serve. We are proud to have you as part of our team and look forward to seeing all that you accomplish in the years ahead.
🚒👏 Congratulations, Timothy! 👏🚒

Q&A:

When did you first become interested in the fire service, and what inspired you to join PVFD in 2020?
I first became interested in the fire service during my senior year of high school. I always had a passion to serve the community and be a part of something bigger than myself. Ponder was the town that I grew up in, and I wanted to give back to it.

Many people don't realize that firefighters often serve multiple departments. What motivates you to continue working part-time with PVFD while serving full-time elsewhere?
I continue working part-time with PVFD because of my commitment to the community and the department. It’s been rewarding to watch PVFD grow from an all-volunteer department into one with full-time, part-time, and volunteer personnel. Being able to play a small role in that growth while continuing to serve alongside the people who helped shape the department means a lot to me.

What do you enjoy most about being a member of the Ponder Volunteer Fire Department?
What I enjoy most about being a member of the Ponder Volunteer Fire Department is the strong sense of camaraderie and teamwork. It feels like being part of one big family, united by a shared commitment to serving our community.

Thank you for reading, and we'll catch you next time! God Bless Ponder!

On this Memorial Day, we pause to remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

As firefighters, we understand the weight of answering the call, leaving behind our families, stepping into the unknown, and putting others before ourselves. It’s a responsibility we carry with pride, but also with the understanding that not all who answer that call make it home.

Today, we honor those who gave everything in defense of our freedom. Their courage, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to something greater than themselves will never be forgotten.

We also remember the families they left behind, the ones who continue to carry their legacy, their strength, and their sacrifice each and every day.

Let this day serve as a reminder of the true cost of freedom and the heroes who paid it.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

🚨 MEMBER OF THE WEEK 🚨

Good morning, Ponder!

This week we are proud to recognize Firefighter/Paramedic Athenia Barber as our Member of the Week.

Athenia began her journey in the fire service in March of 2015, volunteering with Ponder while attending the fire academy. From there, she continued to build her foundation by completing EMT school and advancing into paramedic school, showing early on her commitment to growing in this profession.

Her dedication to serving others led her to volunteer with Krum Fire Department from February 2019 through November 2020. She continued gaining experience while working part-time with Justin Fire Department from October 2020 through December 2024.

In October 2022, Athenia took the next step in her career by joining the Trophy Club Fire Department as a full-time Firefighter/Paramedic, where she continues to serve today.

Athenia’s path reflects hard work, persistence, and a true passion for the fire service. From volunteer beginnings to a full-time career, she has consistently pushed herself to improve and serve her community at a high level.

We are proud to have Athenia as part of our team. Congratulations on being our Member of the Week!

Get to know Firefighter Barber:

Q: What advice would you give someone who wants to become a firefighter?
A: I would advise someone to research the job in its entirety, speak with current or past firefighters to get their feedback as to why they do it and what they enjoy most or least about the career. The career has amazing rewards and benefits giving back to the community, but it also has its challenges. Unfortunately, sometimes individuals make it all the way through the fire academy or EMT/Paramedic programs before they realize it is not the right career for them. Once they realize it is for them, I would tell them to stay patient and consistent. You might struggle through any parts of the process including schooling, hiring, and physical agility testing with departments. But you have to stay determined and focus on the bigger picture and remember what the ultimate end goal is.

Q: How do you stay calm during dangerous situations?
A: Panic gets you nowhere. A lot of times, people feed off of one another’s energy. If you are always on edge, stressed out, or in panic mode, then you are putting your patients, partners, or yourself at risk. On the scene of a fire or on an emergency call is not the time to get flustered, caught in your feelings, or overwhelmed. Those feelings or stressors have to get put on the back burner in order to stay calm, collected, and focused. I just remember my coworkers depend on me at the scene and back at the firehouse and my family depends on me to get home safe. Those thoughts help me stay relaxed.

Q: What’s the most challenging part of your job?
A: Balancing the emotional and physical demands of the work while still showing up fully for my family. Working as a female in a predominantly male field constantly feels like you are having to prove yourself, not just once, but over and over. There is pressure to be strong enough, tough enough, capable enough, while trying not to lose the small, soft sides I have! Being a mom of three on top of that adds an entirely different layer. Leaving home for 48 hours at a time means missing bedtime routines, first steps, and everyday matters. My 3 kids are my drive to never give up and continue to show that you can meet your career goals if you stick with it and stay determined and dedicated. My husband is the saving grace that keeps the house and kids afloat while I get to do a career I absolutely love, all while serving our community!

Today, on International Family Day, we take a moment to recognize the incredible families who stand behind our firefighters every day.
While our members answer the call, at all hours, in all conditions, it’s their families who hold things together at home. You endure the late nights, the missed holidays, the interrupted dinners, and the uncertainty that comes with the job. Your strength, patience, and unwavering support do not go unnoticed.
Behind every firefighter is a family making sacrifices of their own—offering encouragement after tough calls, celebrating the wins, and standing strong through the challenges. You are the quiet backbone of this department, and your role is just as important as that of those on the front lines.
Because of you, our firefighters can serve with focus, commitment, and pride. Because of you, this department is stronger, more resilient, and more connected.
From all of us, thank you for the love, support, and sacrifices you give, not just today, but every single day. We are proud to serve alongside such an incredible extended family. ❤️🔥
