Confused about when to buy a Medigap policy? Timing is everything!
If you’re 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare, federal law lets you buy a Medigap policy during certain enrollment periods. There are two types:

1. Your open enrollment period: a six-month window starting when you’re 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B.
2. When you have guaranteed issue rights—within 63 days of losing or ending certain health coverage.

During these periods, insurers must sell you a policy. If you miss them, your costs may rise, options may be limited, or you might not be able to buy .

Some states offer more protections. For example, in New York and Connecticut you can buy Medigap year-round.

Check with your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) to learn about your Medigap rights. Use the online SHIP Locator (www.shiphelp.org/ships) or call 877-839-2675 (say Medicare when prompted) to find your local SHIP.
