The 2026 Summer Reading Program- “Plant a Seed, READ” culminated this evening with our big Finale Party. There was lots of prizes, face painting, a fun farm animal hide and seek game, AND…”Peaches” the pig! Our 2026 readers read a whopping 4,507 hours of reading in just 5 week’s time so Ms. Kristin had to Kiss The Pig this afternoon. Many thanks to The Zoo Lady Crew for amazing artistry and face painting, and a big thank you to Clint Steidinger and Sam from Strawn Farm for bringing “Peaches” to Pontiac for our extra summer reading incentive!! It’s been an amazing summer of reading fun and we hope everyone enjoyed it!

Our annual program is 100% funded by generous donations from local businesses and families. Summer Reading 2026 “Plant a Seed, Read”: Week 4 Recap-

Week 4 of summer reading had our readers thinking both like farmers and like entrepreneurs as they discovered all the benefits we receive from our farmers around us. We started out the week with Ms. Jamie showing us how big the basil, oregano, and chive plants we planted in week 1 had gotten. Ms. Jamie sure has a big green thumb! We used these herbs to make a tasty herb dipping oil to take home. We then learned how to make bread in a bag to pair with our dipping oil to make a yummy snack.

On Wednesday we welcomed Ms. Debbie from Livingston county Agriculture. She read us a wonderful book titled “George Washington Plants a Nation” which taught us alot about the scientist and farmer George Washington was. He did a lot to advance agriculture and farming and some of his discoveries are still used today! We practiced harvesting wheat the way the horses did back then and we made journals to take notes in like George Washington.

Our family event for the week challenged us to make a profitable food truck theme and design. Our summer readers were very creative and enjoyed making food trucks with some truly tasty menus.

We ended the week with making some bird feeders using dried seeds from plants we had learned about. Our bird feeders will invite birds for us to enjoy and watch in our backyards.

Our summer READ sign was also installed and our readers enjoyed capturing some keepsake photos next to their artwork.

The Pontiac Public Library is incredibly grateful to State Librarian, Alexi Giannoulias Illinois Secretary of State and the Illinois State Library for their continued commitment to expanding funding avenues to public libraries especially in rural areas like Pontiac. In addition to our annual Per Capita Grant, the Pontiac Public Library is excited to announce grant awards for the expanded Equalization Aid Grant and a very generous $91,000 Illinois Construction Grant that will assist with a much needed replacement of the 35 year old HVAC system at the library! Thank you Secretary Giannoulias and all of your staff for your support!!

For our summer reading family event for Week 4 we challenged our summer readers to a Farm-to-Table Food Truck Challenge. Tonight they were given $50 in play money, a farm stand/produce item list, a food truck template, and a blank menu board. They had to design a food truck and theme, build a themed menu, buy items from the farm stand to support their menu, and price their food items to make their food truck profitable. And boy do we have some creative and smart summer readers! Their ideas were truly incredible. They built smoothie food trucks, taco trucks, pie trucks, breakfast trucks and SO many more!
