We are a group of friends who bought a house in a rough neighborhood and moved in with a posture of humility, looking for ways to help improve our neighborhood. This has looked like gardens, orchards, neighborhood barbecues and movies in the gardens. We hope that in the coming months it also looks like renovating houses, starting a tutoring program and a few small businesses to help our neighbors have access to jobs.

I am sorry-- did you think that a little temperature dip means we are done working in the gardens? No way!

Big thanks to our volunteers this weekend for coming out, prepping our pad for our wash-pack, and putting new plastic on our big greenhouse.

We are a day late, but we wanted to shout out, in honor of National Credit Union Day, the amazing credit unions who partner with our work here in Pontiac. As you consider who to bank with, consider who supports the communities that you live and serve in.

Genisys Credit Union is a champion of many of our impactful community events such as Summer slam. More than any other group, Theresa Doan sits and watches to see which groups are making the most difference in the lives of people.

Vibe Credit Union supports out neighbor care work every year and always has their ear to the community looking for the most effective ways to support.

Chief Financial CU has been in the city of Pontiac for a long time and is preparing a new branch in the city very soon! They are always eager to support the "weird" but important events happening in our community. We also are looking at innovative housing ideas with them

MSU Federal Credit Union supports Main Street small business grants which have supported several businesses along the Huron Corridor.

Team One Credit Union who, for some time, supported the work at Sprout Fresh Food Store and our subsidized food model.

Thank you to all of our credit union partners for all the ways we find to support our community!

Looking for a fun way for you and the family to support Micah 6 Community?

Consider running The Mighty Gobbler 5K in Troy, Michigan on Thanksgiving Day. You do not have to go all the way to Detroit to find a fun, professionally organized, community-minded 5k, featuring close to 1000 runners of all sizes, abilities, levels of seriousness, and places of origin.

The Mighty Gobbler 5K has been supporting Micah 6 Community for almost a decade and we are thrilled to continue our partnership!

If you were around Micah 6 Community this summer, you likely heard about our apartment water catastrophe. A plumbing issue upstairs led to close to 1000 gallons of water pouring onto the floor and seeping into the apartment below.

This month we were able to finish the needed repairs and renovation and move in a neighbor. Thanks to all the volunteers and professionals who jumped in, supplied materials and hands.

Happy October 1 everyone!

As we step into the last quarter of the year and you and your family are thinking about your end-of-year giving, the best advice I have is to do it EARLY! Waiting until December gives you more opportunity for "life" to happen and the greater likelihood you have of saying, "Dang, I wish we could do more."

October is a great time for your end of year giving. There aren't as many travel holidays, big meals, gifts to buy or engagements to attend. Your wife's sister hasn't put together the holiday party with the $75 minimum white elephant gift and your utilities haven't take the hard turn north.

Whether it is to Micah 6 Community or another amazing organization closer to your heart, make your end-of-year gift a priority to check off earlier with intentionality rather than later with what's left over.

For anyone who has Section 8 or works with folks who rely on Section 8 for housing, please be familiar with how a number of aspects are being affected.

Highlights that we are running into:
- If you have your voucher and are staying in your house, nothing changes about your amount. HOWEVER, if you move, your voucher will decrease (we are seeing by $200 or more).
- There are possible work requirements coming.
- There are possible time limits coming.

If you rely on a Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher to pay your rent, 2026 is a year to pay close attention. The federal housing assistance landscape is exp…

A lot of big positive changes in this girls life!

In the past few weeks Ryan passed her drivers test, moved into her new apartment, got her first car, and is starting a new job, (and went to her first Detroit Tigers game). This is such an exciting age where tectonic level changes can all happen incredibly quickly and she is in that season.

Ryan started out at Micah 6 as a Summer Youth Employment program kid, has taken two trips to Flaming Pine Youth Camp, has traveled with us to Boston, Dallas, Arkansas, Florida, and beyond. She is growing in her confidence, her abilities, and her horizons.

We are incredibly proud of her. If you see her out in the world, congratulate her, or drop something nice in the comments.

Volunteer Opportunities!

Hello Everyone, I just wanted to share some upcoming volunteer opportunities if you're looking for them.

October:
- We are putting the gardens to bed slowly but surely. Garden volunteers are needed every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9-12 at the greenhouses by 32 Newberry in Pontiac. No need to call ahead, just come out and ask for Steve or Jim!
- We are collecting hats, coats and gloves for our give away in early November. Check out our Hat, Coat, Glove Give Away for information on that event.
- Tulip planting! We want to get as many tulips in the ground as possible before the ground freezes so we can have an explosion of color in the spring. Find a group of friends and give us a weeks notice and we can be ready for you!
- Painting! One of the last but most exciting spaces at Webster Community Center is set to finish prep-work this week and then it needs a good painting! Get together a group of friends and we'd love to let you jump in and paint!

November:
- Still have a need for helpers in the garden.
- Hat, Coat, Glove Give Away will need a number of folks who can help sort, set out, and keep organized all of our winter gear. We may also need some shoppers in the days leading up to the event. We could especially use Spanish Speakers.
- Food distribution! As we get closer to Thanksgiving, we have great partners who bring us Thanksgiving meals to share with our families. We do need help, from time to time, delivering those meals.
- Holiday decoration day! We will be GOING. ALL. OUT. for the holidays. This means trees, ribbon, gifts, etc. We are going to need lots of elves to help put this together in a short amount of time.
- End of year envelope stuffing!

December:
- We will still need helpers in the garden.
- Everything in December is pointed at Micah 6's Santa Workshop event. We are looking for donors, shoppers, people who can help set up and stage the event, folks who want to hand out stockings, candy canes, hot chocolate, and so on. Please look over the volunteer sign up and see where you might fit! We could especially use Spanish Speakers.
