2026 Forest Forensics and History Hikes 🍁

MSU Extension is offering a forest forensic webinar as well as history hikes at various locations throughout the state!

Forest forensics is the art and science of reading the forested landscape, formally described by Tom Wessels of Antioch University.

The Opening Webinar will be held on Thursday, October 15 from 6-7 pm. During the webinar, we will give a brief description of forest forensics, followed an overview of each of the history hikes that are listed below:

In-Person History Hike Options:
• Alger County: Saturday, October 17 from 10 am to noon at Historic Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp Elinore (near Wetmore)
• Crawford County: Saturday, November 7 at from 10 am - noon at the Historic (CCC) Camp AuSable
• Houghton County: Saturday, Oct. 24th from 10 am-noon at the Keweenaw Land Trust's Boston Creek Nature Area
• Gladwin County: Friday, October 23 from 5 pm-6:30 pm at the Gladwin Recreation Area
• Marquette County: Sunday, November 8th from 11am-12 pm at the Chocolay Bayou Nature Preserve in Harvey, MI
• Oakland County: Tuesday, October 27 from 1-4 pm at Independence Oaks in Clarkston

Registration is now open for the award-winning MSU Extension Introduction to Lakes Online course!

This six-week program helps participants understand lake ecology, water quality, aquatic plants, shoreline protection, Michigan water law, and lake stewardship through engaging online lessons and expert instruction.

The 2027 course runs January 26 to March 19. The registration deadline is January 29.
