November 12, 2001 the unit was transferred to the Patrol Services Division of OCSO and officially became the Mounted Unit. Oakland County’s Mounted Unit patrols Oakland County’s Parks and Trails, as well as regular City Patrols, especially during the holiday season. The Mounted Unit represents the Sheriff’s Office at public events and ceremonies. We also will assist our full time deputies during times of civil unrest for their safety and the public’s safety.

This past weekend, our OCSO Mounted unit held a recruiting event at the Michigan State University Horse Expo in Lansing. Our Unit participated in the "Color Guard- Presentation of Colors" opening ceremonies along with several other Mounted Units from across the state. The OCSO Mounted Unit also participated in "Uniform Competition." The Uniform Competition standard is set extremely high, with every inch of both rider and horse being meticulously inspected and scrutinized by professional judges for the slightest flaw. A tremendous amount of teamwork went into the competition that took 5 different deputies many hours to complete. The hard work paid off, and our team took 1st place. They also took 1st place at the same competition in 2023 and 2025. To our Mounted Unit Deputies, Kristin Small, Chris Small, Cara Ureel, Rebecca Patton, and Lauren McMullen, we thank you for your hard work, professionalism, and dedication to excellence.

Oakland County Mounted Unit recently attended the 40th Annual National Mounted Police Colloquium. The Colloquium is an amazing training opportunity for our deputies and their mounts to attend. It is a multi- jurisdictional training, meaning Mounted Units from all over the United States and Canada can attend. The training schedule is comprised of the best international and national instructors.

The Colloquium is hosted in The Kentucky Horse Park, by Kentucky Horse Park Police and the Lexington Mounted Police.

During the training Deputy Lokuta, Deputy Patton and Deputy Ureel practiced equitation, obstacles, tactical formations, groundwork, and learned large animal rescue techniques. After completing a few days of training, our deputies and their mounts are then able to compete against the other jurisdictions to show off their new knowledge.

The KHP is an amazing place for our Mounted Unit to network with other Mounted Units and trainers. This aids our unit in being educated and well-rounded; Which in turn helps us better serve our community here at home.

Went for some ice-cold apple cider and fresh doughnuts at the Goodison Cider Mill in neighboring Oakland Township and encountered four friendly members of the Oakland County Sheriff's Mounted Unit who've been out patrolling the Paint Creek Trail. Say "hello" to Deputy Chodak, Deputy Van Dongen and their equine partners, O'Rourke and Whisky. Nice to meet you all! Stay safe! Photo by C.J. Carnacchio.

Today marks the solemn 24th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks. Sheriff Bouchard led a delegation of Oakland County Sheriff’s Office volunteers, bringing supplies and support to Ground Zero in the hours following the devastating events.
This anniversary serves as a powerful reminder of the lives lost, the heroism shown, and the enduring resilience of the United States of America. We will never forget.
Here at home, Michigan Fallen Heroes Memorial will host its annual 9/11 Ceremony this afternoon to honor fallen Detroit Police Officer Kelvin Patrick , Warren Firefighter EMT Christopher Kosmowski, MSP Trooper Daniel M. Kerstetter, and Bay County Sheriff's Deputy John T. Heppner (EOW 11/6/1928)
