Pearl River County Master Gardeners

Pearl River County Master Gardeners Through the Master Gardener program, individuals are trained and certified in consumer horticulture and related areas.

The Master Gardener Volunteer program is a great way to gain horticultural expertise at a low cost, meet other avid gardeners, share gardening experiences, get connected to the community, and belong to a well-respected and educational organization. In exchange for 40 hours of educational training, individuals are required to return 40 hours of volunteer service within one year of their training. T

his service should help county Extension offices with horticulture projects that benefit their local communities. After the first year, volunteers are required to return 20 hours of volunteer service and to attend 12 hours of educational training to remain certified as Master Gardeners. Continuing education is offered to encourage long-term commitments. Most certified Master Gardeners serve five to seven years. The Master Gardener approach helps the local Extension office reach a broader audience than is possible with only one or two agents. It also provides the local office a way to serve the public and, at the same time, develop a supportive clientele group. Volunteers help extend the educational arm of the university to the public by providing horticultural information based on university research and recommendations.

The Pearl River County Master Gardeners assembled to greet visitors attending the Blueberry Jubilee Festival, who rode on USDA wagons to tour their facilities and visit our garden, featuring 'The Goodness of Gardening,' the 2026 Landscape Challenge themed All-America Selections, and the 250th Anniversary of Our Nation display garden. This exhibit emphasized sensory experiences to uplift spirits. We extend our gratitude to the 148 guests who visited, especially Our 2026 Blueberry Queens. We nearly depleting our supply of MSU Publications, which many appreciated receiving. South Branch generously provided bottled water for all guests, offering relief from the extreme heat, while the water fountain proved entertaining for children. Our members kindly provided tasty dishes for the group and staff, enhancing the day's enjoyment.
We thank everyone that visited with us, and we welcome you to attend our monthly meetings and also to become a member of our great group.

Today the MGs spent a relaxing time at The Crosby Arboretum. Patricia Drackett, Director invited us to share a photo tour of various gardens in the US and abroad. She provided 2 delicious lasagnas, sourdough bread, and salads. It was a nice time discussing flowers from all over.

On Sunday, a group of Master Gardeners toured Southern Roots Nursery in Poplarville. Despite inclement weather, the group enthusiastically explored the grounds, selecting exceptional, high-quality plants. We commend Hank and Dana Spiers for their warm hospitality. A visit is highly recommended. I will definitely be back!
Thanks to Hank for capturing photos.

The Poplarville 4-H JMG Pollinator Gardens and planters are being stocked with a trunk full of plants and several bags of brown mulch, generously funded by 4-H JMG. Progress updates will be shared throughout the week. The gardens are in urgent need of soil to replenish several depleted boxes. Donations of soil bags would be greatly appreciated. Furthermore, a mulch donation is scheduled for this Thursday or Friday, and assistance will be needed to distribute it to the raised beds. Individuals can become a Friend of the Park Member starting June 15th by contacting the Pearl River County Extension Office, with all annual membership proceeds supporting the gardens' annual maintenance. Your contribution will help sustain a haven for pollinators, particularly the Monarchs, during their spring & fall migration. Membership has 4 tiers to choose to become a member. Membership is yearly. (July 2026-July 2027)
