An open letter from the SDGP:

We call upon every Republican and Democrat in South Dakota, particularly those holding or seeking office, to publicly state their support for returning of all federal land in the Black Hills to the Oceti Sakowin.

Stand up or be voted out!

To Whom It May Concern,

We, the South Dakota Green Party (SDGP), pen this message with a sense of unyielding urgency and unbridled conviction, calling for the end of a longstanding atrocity. As Native American Heritage Month brings into focus the heritage and history of the Indigenous peoples of our land, it also casts a harsh light on the injustices they continue to face—specifically, the wrongful withholding of the Black Hills from the Oceti Sakowin, the rightful Dakota, Nakota, and Lakota owners.

The history of the Black Hills is a scar on the fabric of our nation, a clear-cut case of theft under the broken promises of the U.S. government. The annals of history, particularly the aftermath of the Red Cloud Wars and the Treaty of Fort Laramie of 1868, record not only broken promises but a betrayal of trust so profound that it has marred our national integrity.

This matter transcends political allegiance and partisan lines. It is a question of moral fiber, of adhering to the rule of law and ensuring that America lives up to its own legal and ethical standards. In the landmark 1980 U.S. Supreme Court case "United States v. Sioux Nation of Indians," the court affirmed not merely the illegality of the land seizure but declared that the original treaty was, indeed, still in effect. It was a clear acknowledgment that the United States government had acted in violation of its own laws and commitments.

We call upon every Republican and Democrat in South Dakota, particularly those holding or seeking office, to publicly state their support for returning the Black Hills to the Oceti Sakowin. It is not merely a demand but an expectation that you, as our representatives, will uphold the laws of the United States of America and work to rectify this historical wrong.

To our elected officials: the time for equivocation is over. This should be a bipartisan issue. It is a matter of justice, fairness, and integrity. Your public support for the return of the Black Hills will signal a commitment to honoring the treaties and laws of our nation, serving justice where it has been denied for far too long.

To the people of South Dakota and the broader United States: this is not only an Indigenous issue but an American issue. It is about living up to the ideals we all hold dear.

We will not relent in our call for justice. The South Dakota Green Party demands action, not tomorrow, not in some distant future, but now. Let us join together to heal the wounds of the past and forge a path toward a future where respect for the law and for our shared humanity prevails.

Yours in solidarity and determination,

South Dakota Green Party

🌱🎉History Made in South Dakota! 🌱🎉

Exciting news! The South Dakota Green Party (SDGP) is officially accredited with the national Green Party of the US! 🌟 But this isn't just an end—it's a powerful new beginning.

We're poised not only to represent but to reimagine our state — a state where every voice is heard, where the environment is treasured, where historical treaties are upheld with respect, and where our most vulnerable are protected and uplifted.

We're not here for mere representation; we're here to revolutionize.

The SDGP is not just a party; it's a promise — a promise of a South Dakota where every individual, every voice, counts,

🌿 South Dakota Green Party Official Statement on the illegal theft of Native American children 🌿

We stand at a crossroads of justice and apathy. The truth about what's happening to Native children in our state must be brought to the forefront.

🚨The statistics are alarming🚨:

🔴 700+ Native children are removed from their homes EACH YEAR.
🔴 15%: The percentage of our child population that's Native American.
🔴 50%+: The percentage of those children in foster care who are Native American.
🔴 A staggering 90% of these Native children are placed in white homes, overlooking available tribal foster homes.

While most Republicans and Democrats in South Dakota turn a blind eye, these children and their families are left to bear the brunt of a system that profits from their pain. This is not just a violation of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA); it's a violation of human rights.

The time to act is NOW.

The Indigenous Peoples Movement (IPM) has crafted a Call to Action (CTA) to address this grave injustice. We, the South Dakota Green Party, stand in solidarity with this cause and urge you to do the same.

🌿 South Dakota Green Party Quote of the Day 🌿

“The old Lakota was wise. He knew that man's heart away from nature becomes hard; he knew that lack of respect for growing, living things soon led to lack of respect for humans, too.” - Luther Standing Bear

A few words about the man behind this wisdom: Luther Standing Bear was a prominent Oglala Lakota chief, actor, writer, and advocate for the preservation of Lakota heritage and sovereignty in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in a challenging era, he bridged the gap between indigenous traditions and the modern world, emphasizing the importance of nature and the sacred bond we share with it.

Here in South Dakota, we're proud to say that the Green Party is the only party that genuinely prioritizes the well-being of our Earth. We may not change the world overnight, but we're determined to start at the local level with this invaluable knowledge. It's time to work together to cherish and protect our home.

In today's times, as we face environmental and social challenges, we must remember and honor the respect our lands, nature, and communities deserve. A heart that cherishes nature will always cherish all living beings. 🌎❤️

🌱 Híŋhaŋni wašté/Good Morning from the Green Party 🌱

Today, we spotlight an illuminating thought from Dr. Cornel West, a renowned scholar, and philosopher:

"Of course, the aim of a constitutional democracy is to safeguard the rights of the minority and avoid the tyranny of the majority."

🌽 In South Dakota, as a state filled with diverse views, communities, Tribal Nations, and ecosystems, this quote holds particular significance. We recognize the value of every voice, especially those that are often left unheard or marginalized.

🌏 The South Dakota Green Party is committed to a vision that ensures that every resident—whether they belong to the majority or minority—feels seen, heard, and valued. Our belief in social justice, ecological wisdom, grassroots democracy, and non-violence brings us closer to realizing this vision every day.

🤝 Join us in our effort to strengthen the pillars of democracy. Let us unite, not just for the majority, but for every individual who calls South Dakota home.

🌿📢 Unveiling the Silence on Tribal Nation Attacks 📢🌿

Our message is clear: Governor Nome's statements, coupled with the subsequent silence from the majority of both Republican and Democratic leaders in our state, are deeply reprehensible.

Once again, we find ourselves in a situation where the voices of our tribal nations are under attack. Governor Noem's recent comments regarding the U.S. southern border and our tribal nations demand our attention and response.

To insinuate or hint that these sovereign Nations might be complicit in drug trafficking is a direct affront to them as members of tribal nations and as residents of South Dakota.

The two-party system must be dismantled to ensure that the voices of EVERY resident in South Dakota are not only heard but also accorded the respect they deserve. This is why we are pushing for full ballot access in South Dakota.

The era of Republicans and Democrats monopolizing our state has concluded. The moment has arrived to communicate to every politician that failing to uphold Tribal sovereignty is a breach of their oath to safeguard the US Constitution, which unequivocally declares in Article VI, Section 2 that “all treaties are the supreme law of the land.”

Respect tribal sovereignty or we will elect someone else!
