Understanding Ohio’s E-Bike Laws

As e-bikes become more popular around Port Clinton, we want to make sure everyone knows the rules that keep riders and pedestrians safe. Ohio law separates e-bikes into three classes based on speed and how the motor works. For most riders, there’s no age limit — but Class 3 e-bikes, which can reach up to 28 mph, are restricted to riders 16 and older, and helmets are required for anyone on those bikes.

All e-bike riders must follow the same traffic laws as traditional bicycles: ride with traffic, obey signals, use lights at night, and yield to pedestrians. Class 1 and 2 e-bikes can use shared-use paths unless posted otherwise, while Class 3 bikes are limited to roads and bike lanes.

Our goal is simple: keep everyone safe while enjoying the freedom and convenience e-bikes offer. Ride smart, stay alert, and look out for one another.
