ROAD WORKER DIES FROM INJURIES SUSTAINED IN CRASH

(Fort Gratiot Township) The road worker who was struck by a vehicle Tuesday afternoon in Fort Gratiot Township has died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Detectives from the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office were notified today that 44 year old Julian Perez of Indianapolis had died at McLaren Macomb hospital late this morning.

St. Clair County Sheriff Deputies had been called to the scene of a car-pedestrian injury crash on M-25 north of Carrigan Road shortly after noon on Tuesday. When they arrived, they found the Perez unresponsive. He was transported by Tri-Hospital EMS to McLaren Port Huron Hospital and was later transported to McLaren Macomb.

The incident occurred when a 28 year old woman from Marlette was driving her vehicle northbound on M-25. As she drove through the construction zone, she struck the road worker. Also in the vehicle were her husband and two young children. None of them suffered any injuries.

The Sheriff’s Office Accident Investigation Division is conducting an ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash. No charges have been brought against the driver of the vehicle at this time.

SHERIFF’S OFFICE UNVEILS NEW DRUG TAKE BACK BOX

(Port Huron Township) The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office has made it easier for people wishing to dispose of unwanted or expired pills.

Thanks to a donation from Rite Aid/KidCents, a new receptacle stands in the front lobby of the Sheriff’s Office at 1170 Michigan Road in Port Huron Township.

“We are excited to have this box available for our citizens,” said Sheriff Tim Donnellon. “We are extremely appreciative that Rite Aid/KidCents saw a need and delivered the box to help keep these pills off the streets and out of our water.”

Anyone with unwanted or expired pills can simply come into the Sheriff’s Office lobby Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and drop their pill container in the box. Only pills can be accepted. No liquids, syringes, inhalers or other materials are allowed in the box.

The Sheriff’s Office will also be a part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 26th.

DEPUTIES CRACKING DOWN ON TEXTING AND DRIVING

(Port Huron Township) All this month, deputies from the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office and law enforcement officers nationwide will be stepping up patrols for motorists who text while driving. The national U Drive. U Text. U Pay. high-visibility enforcement campaign has two goals: conduct enforcement of anti-texting laws and advertise these efforts with media and social media outreach to make drivers aware of the enforcement and encourage them to obey the law.

“Driving and texting is not only dangerous and irresponsible, it’s illegal,” said Sheriff Tim Donnellon. “Drivers who break our state’s texting law will be stopped and issued a citation.”

Texting while driving is especially dangerous because it involves three main types of distraction:
• Visual- taking your eyes off the road
• Manual- taking your hands off the wheel
• Cognitive- taking your mind off the task of driving

Michigan’s texting law prohibits drivers from reading, manually typing or sending a text message while driving. Violating the texting law may be costly. Drivers convicted of a first offense may be fine $100, with subsequent offenses of $200 fines.

Distracted driving statistics paint a grim picture: In 2016, an estimated 3,450 people were killed nationwide in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Distracted driving crashes made up 9.2 percent of all fatal crashes in 2016.

In Michigan, distracted driving accounted for 12,788 crashes in 2016. Those crashes resulted in 43 fatalities and 5,103 injuries, according to the Michigan State Police Criminal Justice Information Center.
