There’s something about spring in Port Huron.

Fresh air. Longer evenings. Lawns turning green. Flowers starting to bloom around our properties.

Spring reminds us that housing isn’t always just shelter — it’s the things that make home…home. It’s where routines reset, gardens grow, and neighbors reconnect after a long winter.

As the season changes, we’re continuing maintenance projects, landscaping improvements, and planning efforts to keep our communities welcoming and well cared for.

Here’s to new beginnings — and steady foundations.

In case you missed it…check out this powerful story from a former resident.

Deschalyn Riase’s story is ultimately about hard work, perseverance, and a family committed to building an amazing future. With the support of stable housing, her mom was able to create consistency and opportunity — and Deschalyn and her siblings did the rest.

Their achievements are a testament to resilience, dedication, and the power of a strong foundation at home.

We hosted our annual tenant appreciation breakfasts last week at Desmond Landing and Peru Village.

It was a great opportunity to spend time together and appreciate the seniors who make our communities what they are.

Thank you to all of our residents who joined us — we appreciate you!

For many seniors, affordable housing means something simple but powerful:

Staying in the community they helped build.

It means remaining near familiar grocery stores, churches, doctors, and friends.

Housing stability later in life preserves independence and dignity.

Public housing for seniors isn’t about starting over. It’s about staying rooted.

We talk a lot about roads, bridges, and utilities as infrastructure.

But housing? Housing is infrastructure too.

When people have stable housing:
• Employers retain workers
• Schools maintain consistent enrollment
• Health systems see fewer crisis visits
• Neighborhoods experience less turnover

Affordable housing isn’t separate from economic development — it supports it. In fact, with the four locations we manage within the county, we are creating an economic impact for St. Clair County of over $28 million per year.

At the Port Huron Housing Commission, our work quietly underpins systems the entire community relies on.
