Department History
Back in the 1860's, Port Huron was protected from the ravages of fire by an organization known as the Eagle Hose Company. It was made up of a group of volunteers who were engaged in other various trades or businesses in the town but who responded to the alarm in case of fire. They were a group of stalwart young men who took great pride in their organization and their duties as f

ire fighters. In those days, it was considered a matter of community service to belong to this group whose activities were social as well as civic. The Port Huron Fire Department is said to be among the first in the State of Michigan. The Sixth Ward Hose Company was duly organized October 20, 1875, under the name of "Deluge Hose". In the year 1877, the volunteer company disbanded and the city installed a salaried part time fire department. These men were generally engaged in other occupations but slept in the engine houses and were ready for any emergency call. In 1901, a full time department was installed. Then Fire Chief Frank J. Schaller recalled how, in the 1890's when he joined the department, two and three-horse hitches were used. "The horses were all in stalls at the rear of the house. It was a thrilling sight to watch those trained animals spring to their places under the harness in front of the carts at the sound of the alarm. Of course, the fire department always had the fastest horses obtainable and everything on the road gave way before them." At that time, Engine Co.'s No 1 and 2 were equipped with hose wagons, chemicals and ladder wagons, all three-horse hitches, and No. 3, at the North End, had two-horse hitches. In 1904, an American LaFrance steam pumper was purchased. Up to this time, pressure was obtained from the pumping station of the city water department. Horses continued to be used in the fire department up until 1913, when the first motor-driven apparatus appeared on the city streets. Hose Company No. 4, at South Park was added to the department about 1907. Fire Department Administration
The administrative staff consists of the Fire Chief, Fire Marshal and Div. The administrative staff is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the fire department as well as scheduling fire prevention inspections, public education programs, following up on citizen complaints, and record keeping. The Fire Chief is required to assure that all federal, state and local laws are complied with. Fire Employment
Parties interested in becoming fire fighters with the Port Huron Fire Department must have completed a minimum of Fire Fighter II training as certified by the MFFTC. Certificates of training verifying successful completion of:

EMT (must be current)
Applications are only accepted when vacancies exist and must be turned in to the Human Resources Department. When a vacancy exists, an ad will be placed in The Times Herald classifieds as well as on the City web site. Applications must be accompanied by a resume and copies of completed educational requirements.

This week, several members of the Port Huron Fire Department spent the week in a Confined Space Rescue Technician class taught by MUSAR - Michigan Urban Search and Rescue.

This is a 45-hour course that focuses on how to rescue people trapped in confined spaces. These could be industrial incidents or other types of emergencies.

This is the 2nd of 3 classes in which the department will be training its members on this type of rescue.

Fire Station No. 4 will temporarily close beginning Monday, August 17, 2026, for scheduled renovations to the station’s apron and apparatus bay floor. Because the work will impact normal operations, the fire company assigned to Station No. 4 will temporarily relocate to Station No. 1.
The relocation is expected to remain in place through mid-September, depending on the contractor’s progress and recommendations.

Today, Port Huron Fire Department members conducted rope rescue training focusing on team raising and lowering operations from the training tower.

Technical rescue is a perishable skill that requires regular practice. Today's drill allowed crews to refresh critical rope rescue techniques, reinforce safe operating procedures, and maintain proficiency working together as a team.

Training like this ensures our firefighters are prepared when called upon to perform rescues in challenging environments where technical rope systems are required.

Today, Port Huron firefighters participated in oil spill containment training with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

After classroom instruction at Station 1, crews moved to the Black River for hands-on training, where they practiced deploying containment booms using our rescue boats. Although the weather shortened the exercise, our firefighters gained valuable experience that will help us protect our waterways during hazardous materials incidents.

Thank you to the EPA for providing this excellent training. We look forward to additional sessions later this summer to train more of our members.

Preparing today for the emergencies of tomorrow.

Let's work together to prevent fires, injuries, and unnecessary emergency responses this holiday weekend.

**Consumer Fireworks May Be Discharged:**
📅 June 29 – July 4
🕚 11:00 AM – 11:45 PM

**Fireworks Are NOT Permitted:**
❌ Before 11:00 AM or after 11:45 PM
❌ On public property, including streets, sidewalks, parks, and rights-of-way
❌ On school or church property without permission
❌ On another person's property without permission
❌ While under the influence of alcohol or drugs

**Firework Safety Reminders:**
• Keep water or a fire extinguisher nearby.
• Never allow children to handle or ignite fireworks.
• Never relight a malfunctioning firework.
• Use fireworks away from homes, vehicles, and dry vegetation.
• Soak spent fireworks in water before disposal.
• Keep pets indoors and secure.

✅ CALL 911 IF:
• A fire starts
• Someone is injured
• Fireworks create an immediate danger to people or property

In May, the Port Huron Fire Department welcomed five new firefighters to our team. Over the next year, they will continue an extensive training program as they work toward completing their probationary year.

Over the past few days, training has included aerial operations, forcible entry, firefighter rescue, and search techniques. These hands-on evolutions are just a few of the many skills our probationary firefighters must master before completing their first year.

On June 17, 2026, the Port Huron Fire Department Fire Chief Nicholson proudly held a badge pinning ceremony recognizing Firefighter Ciner and Firefighter Crossley for successfully completing their one-year probationary period and earning promotion to the rank of Firefighter.

The room was filled with family, friends, fellow firefighters, police officers, City Mayor Ashford, and City Administration who gathered to celebrate this important milestone and show their support.

Yesterday, Port Huron Firefighters responded to a residential structure fire where crews safely rescued a dog from the home.

TRI-Hospital EMS personnel were already on scene for the incident and quickly provided immediate care to the rescued dog, utilizing a pet oxygen mask and oxygen therapy until St. Clair County Animal Control arrived to transport Buddy for further evaluation and continued care.

We would like to thank Lakeport Animal Hospital for accepting Buddy for overnight monitoring and treatment. We remain hopeful for a full recovery for this sweet pup.

This incident highlights the outstanding teamwork between multiple responding agencies and disciplines working together to protect both lives and property.

We also want to recognize the quick actions of nearby neighbors who observed smoke coming from the residence, immediately called 911, attempted to alert the homeowners, and helped confirm no one was inside the home. Due to their prompt actions, firefighters were able to contain the fire damage to a portion of the residence; however, significant smoke damage had already spread throughout the home.

Thankfully, no occupants or responders were injured, and no one was home at the time of the fire. Our thoughts are with the displaced family as they begin the recovery process following this difficult event.
