Queen Isabella Causeway Collapse 25th Anniversary Ceremony

September 15, 2026, marks the 25th Anniversary of the collapse of the Queen Isabella Causeway. The City of Port Isabel will host a ceremony at the Port Isabel Event Center at 11 a.m., 9/15.

You are invited to join our south Texas communities as we memorialize the staggering loss of life. And we remember the first responders, community leadership and neighbors who came together to begin a long recovery.

Ceremony followed by speakers and panelists. Refreshments. Open to the Public.

On September 15, 2001, in the early morning hours and just four days after 9/11, steel laden barges collided with the Queen Isabella Causeway causing a collapse of two sections of the bridge. Eight perished.

We go through stacks of newspaper every single week to line crates, keep kennels cozy, and help with quick, clean bedding changes for our shelter pets while they wait for their forever homes.

If you have newspapers stacking up at home, don't recycle them just yet—donate them to us instead!

UPDATE: Due to the predicted and unpredictable weather this Thursday's (7/23) Lighthouse movie date will be rescheduled for Friday, 7/24 at 9 pm.

UPDATE: Due to the predicted and unpredictable weather, this Thursday's Lighthouse movie date will be rescheduled for 7/24 (Friday). SpongeBob's underwater adventures should be a little bit drier then! Activities will be offered at the Port Isabel Lighthouse Keeper's Cottage on Thursday (3-5 pm) and Friday (3-8 pm).

THURSDAY: Join a lighthouse keeper this Thursday (July 23) from 3:00 – 5:00pm for our FREE drop-in activity on the Visitor Center back porch! Inspired by the sunlight that shines through the ocean, bringing SpongeBob's underwater adventures to life on the screen, and the light that passes through and is bent by the lighthouse’s Fresnel lens, create your own colorful suncatcher to see how light can be transformed.

Weather permitting, the Lighthouse is open daily, (Summer Hours), 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Admission: Adults $5; 55+ $4; 5-12 yrs. $3; Military/Vets $2.50. Visitor Center is open daily 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Port Isabel Lighthouse is a Texas Historical Commission State Historic Site.
