South Padre Island, TX, June 15, 2026: Tropical weather will affect the Lower Texas Coast. The models continue to show heavy rain with moderate winds coming to South Padre Island as early as tonight through Wednesday.

The National Weather Service has predicted up to 6 to 8 inches of rain in total this week and winds are anticipated to be up to 20 miles per hour, with gusts up 35 to 40 miles per hour. This storm is expected to cause coastal flooding on South Padre Island. Community members are advised to use caution around areas prone to significant flooding during severe weather.

Tomorrow’s high tide at 8:10 a.m. coupled with the anticipated rainfall, which will significantly slow down the runoff drainage.

The tropical weather that is moving our way develops in stages and could intensify with little time to prepare.

Sandbags will be available today from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Public Works Workshop located at the corner of West Venus and Laguna Boulevard.

The site is “self-bagging,” meaning the bags and sand are provided for free, but residents and businesses will need to bring shovels and fill their own bags.

* Residents will be allowed five bags per property.
* Businesses will be allowed ten bags per property.

Visit https://www.weather.gov/wrn/hurricane-preparedness for more preparedness information.

Sign up for RAVE, the City’s emergency notification system that sends out notifications directly to you via your home phone, cell phone and/or email, by going to www.myspi.org.

Point Isabel ISD is saddened to hear of the passing of South Padre Island Councilman Ken Medders. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and the South Padre Island community that he served.

It is with deep sadness and grief that the City announces the passing of Council Member Ken Medders, Jr.

Council Member Medders was first elected to the City Council in November 2017 and diligently served the South Padre Island community throughout his recent tenure. This period marked a return to municipal leadership for Mr. Medders, who had previously served the community with distinction as a South Padre Island Alderman in the early 1990s. Across both eras of leadership, he left a lasting mark on the Island through his advocacy and commitment to the residents of the Island.

Beyond his formal role in governance, Council Member Medders was deeply passionate about environmental stewardship and community-led conservation. He was a familiar face to the Island every weekend, serving as a tireless advocate and volunteer for the local Saturday Recycling Program. His hands-on dedication to keeping the Island beautiful reflected his love for South Padre Island's ecosystem.

“The sudden passing of Ken is a great loss to our community. He was very passionate about the Island and will be tremendously missed,” said Mayor McNulty. “On behalf of the City Council, Staff, and the community, our thoughts and prayers are with the family in this difficult time.”

The City of South Padre Island extends its heartfelt condolences to the Medders family during this incredibly difficult time. The family will release the details of any memorial or funeral services once arrangements have been finalized.
