Recently, members of the Port Jefferson Fire Department participated in a motor vehicle fire live burn training at the Suffolk County Fire Academy. This hands-on training keeps our crews sharp, prepared, and ready to respond when it matters most. Live burn training such as this allows us to practice fire suppression tactics on vehicles of different sizes, which is critical for our members in a transportation hub such as Port Jefferson.
Thank you to the SCFA for having us!

Taking advantage of the recent winter weather, members of the Port Jefferson Fire Department conducted a live ice rescue training to sharpen the skills that are critical during the colder months.

Hands-on, real-world training like this is vital to ensuring our personnel are prepared to respond quickly, safely, and effectively to any ice-related emergency we may encounter. Practicing in realistic conditions allows our members to build confidence with specialized equipment, refine rescue techniques, and work seamlessly as a team when seconds matter most.

In addition to our in-house drills, each year we send members to attend Ice Rescue Technician 1 and Ice Rescue Technician 2 courses hosted by the Bayport Fire Department. These programs provide advanced instruction and reinforce our commitment to maintaining the highest level of readiness for our community.

We train today so we’re ready tomorrow. Stay safe, and remember—no ice is ever 100% safe.

Today our members took part in hands-on ice rescue training, working with our ice rescue suits and specialized equipment. Personnel practiced safe and effective methods for removing a victim from icy water. Crews also trained with our throw bags, reinforcing proper deployment techniques and accuracy when every second counts.

We reviewed and practiced the rescue priority of preach, reach, throw, go, emphasizing scene safety, clear communication with the victim, and using equipment whenever possible before making direct contact. This type of realistic training helps sharpen skills, build confidence, and ensure we’re prepared to respond quickly in cold-water emergencies.

This session focused on simulated scenarios, with plans to get out on the ice in future trainings to continue building real-world experience. It’s important remember No Ice Is Safe Ice.

PJFD crews responded to reports of a car fire threatening a nearby residential structure. Upon arrival, crews from Engine 5, Engine 3 and Ladder 1 found a vehicle well involved.

Two hose lines were stretched, with one placed into operation to quickly knock down the fire. Crews from Ladder 1 made entry into the residence to check for extension and confirmed negative extension into the home.

Fortunately, there were no injuries.

Thank you to Terryville Fire Department - NY and Port Jefferson EMS for your assistance.
