🚲 Heading out on your e-bike this summer? If you are, remember to ride smart, ride safe, and follow the rules of the road.
Keep in mind: not all motorized bikes qualify as e-bikes under Florida law. Some motorized or electric vehicles are designed for off-road use only and may only be operated on private property β€” not on public roadways, sidewalks, or shared-use paths. This can include certain electric bikes, motorized bikes, and dirt bikes.
Before you ride, check with the manufacturer to understand how your vehicle is classified and where it can legally and safely be operated.
Safety reminders:
βœ… Use your bell or voice when passing
βœ… Watch for pedestrians, cyclists, and traffic
βœ… Use lights and reflective gear at night
βœ… Riders under 16 must wear a helmet
βœ… Follow posted speed limits and share the path responsibly

Our goal is simple: keep everyone safe and help every rider get home safely.

CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE & NEW BEGINNINGS AT POPD

The Port Orange Police Department gathered to celebrate the incredible achievements, dedicated service, and bright futures of our sworn personnel. Please join us in recognizing these outstanding individuals!

First, we are thrilled to officially welcome Officer Kennedy and Officer Kilmer, who were formally sworn in during the ceremony. We are excited to watch them serve and protect the Port Orange community with honor and integrity.

πŸŽ–οΈ Detective Lowery – Award of Merit
Detective Lowery was presented with the Award of Merit for his exceptional work on a deeply challenging case. Thanks to his meticulous and thorough investigation into a violent apartment break-inβ€”where a victim was assaulted with a weapon by an ex-boyfriend, the suspect was ultimately convicted and sent to prison, bringing justice and closure to the victim.

πŸŽ–οΈ Alpha Shift – Unit Citation
Congratulations to our Alpha Shift for earning a Unit Citation! Following a high-dollar burglary at a local apartment complex, these officers moved fast. They quickly identified the primary suspect and, within just a couple of days, successfully apprehended both the suspect and a co-defendant after they attempted to flee the area. Incredible teamwork and swift action!

Finally, we honored the retirement of Officer Pierson, who is stepping down after 21 years of dedicated service to our city. For much of his career, Officer Pierson was a staple of our Motor Unit, representing POPD at numerous motor rodeos and bringing home multiple awards for his elite riding skills. Thank you for more than two decades of keeping our streets safe, Officer Pierson, enjoy your well-deserved retirement!

During a hearing on Wednesday, defendant Eric Bartolozzi entered a no contest plea to Misappropriation Construction Funds $1,000 to $100,000 and was sentenced to four years of probation. Special conditions include $223,348.91 in restitution, which is the total amount of funds he misappropriated from the 32 victims who came forward and cooperated with the investigation. Checks have been made out to these victims and are being picked up this week.

Between 2022 and 2024, Serene Pavers and Stonescaping Inc. of New Smyrna Beach abandoned several paving projects in Volusia County.

Bartolozzi, the owner of the company, transferred customer deposits and payments from the business bank account into his personal bank account. Instead of using the funds to purchase materials and complete projects, he used them for personal expenses, including purchasing new pickup trucks for himself and his girlfriend.

The Port Orange Police Department and the Port Orange Police Athletic League are incredibly proud to announce that New Smyrna Beach High School student, Evan Achterberg, has been awarded a $1,000 PAL Scholarship!

Pictured here are Chief Marino, Assistant Chief Proctor and PAL Director Julie Fletcher presenting Evan with his well-deserved award.

Evan’s journey with PAL runs deepβ€”he first joined our family back in 2018 when he was just 10 years old! In his scholarship essay, Evan shared that his time participating in the PAL Junior Lifeguard program actually inspired him to become a certified lifeguard.

We love seeing our programs spark lifelong passions and leadership in our youth. Evan is heading off to the University of Florida next, and we have no doubt he will bring that same dedication and Gator energy to his next big chapter! 🐊✨

2026 LAW ENFORCEMENT MEMORIAL CEREMONY

Today, the Port Orange Police Department had the profound honor of serving as the host agency for the 2026 Volusia & Flagler County Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony, held at Daytona Memorial Park.

This annual ceremony is a solemn and vital tradition, bringing together law enforcement agencies, families, and community members from across both counties to remember, honor, and pay tribute to the brave heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Chief Marino opened the ceremony with welcoming remarks, reflecting on the shared bond of the law enforcement community and our enduring vow to never forget our fallen brothers and sisters.

We were also incredibly proud to have Port Orange Mayor Scott Stiltner serve as this year's Keynote Speaker, sharing powerful words on the depth of service, sacrifice, and the resilience of the families left behind. To conclude the tributes, the Port Orange Police Department Honor Guard was given the distinct privilege of placing the memorial wreath.

To all the families of the fallen who joined us today: you are, and always will be, a part of our law enforcement family. We carry the legacy of your loved ones with us every single day. πŸ’™πŸ–€

The Port Orange Police Department will be taking part in the state's Click It or Ticket campaign, which runs between May 18th and May 31st.

The Click It or Ticket campaign is a high-visibility enforcement effort designed to detect violators of Florida’s traffic laws with special emphasis on occupant protection.

Click It or Ticket isn’t about citations; it’s about saving lives. In 2022, 25,420 vehicle occupants were killed in the United States in crashes. Of those, nearly 50% were not wearing a safety belt. To help prevent crash fatalities, we need to step up safety belt enforcement, day and night!
