🚔 NARCOTICS THROWN FROM TRUCK DURING TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO DUI ARREST 🚔

On May 30, 2026, PSLPD officers responded to a domestic disturbance call and quickly located the involved vehicle leaving the area.

While following the truck, officers observed the driver repeatedly fail to maintain his lane, nearly strike a mailbox, and then make the questionable decision to toss a baggie of ma*****na out of the driver's side window while being followed by a police sergeant.

Spoiler alert: it didn't work.

The discarded ma*****na was quickly recovered by officers, and a DUI investigation was conducted. During the investigation, it was learned alcohol consumption occurred prior to the dispute and traffic stop.

Following field sobriety exercises, David Ward was arrested and charged with:
▪️ Driving Under the Influence (DUI)
▪️ Refusal to Submit to DUI Testing
▪️ Possession of Ma*****na Under 20 Grams
▪️ Tampering with Evidence

Ward was transported to the St. Lucie County Jail without incident.

As it turns out, throwing evidence out the window while driving impaired tends to attract even more attention, not less.

🚔 OVERNIGHT ARREST ROUNDUP 🚔

PSLPD officers stayed busy overnight, resulting in the arrests of three individuals on unrelated charges throughout the city.

▪️ Jeffery Marriott (left) was arrested after allegedly attempting to leave Walmart with 24 stolen items valued at more than $249. Investigators say Marriott changed into clothing taken from the store before attempting to exit without paying. Mariott is being held at SLC Jail under ***Brittany’s Law*** (Registered S*x Offender) and theft.

▪️ Steven Brown (middle) was arrested after officers conducted a traffic stop after identifying a vehicle whose registered owner had a revoked driver's license. A traffic stop confirmed Brown was driving despite having multiple prior convictions for driving while license suspended or revoked. Brown is being held at SLC Jail.

▪️ Alexander Harrell (right) was arrested on charges including DUI, refusal to submit to DUI testing, resisting an officer without violence, and open container. Officers located Harrell intoxicated near a vehicle with the keys readily accessible and later discovered he also had an active warrant for Failure to Appear on a prior DUI charge.

Three arrests. Three separate incidents. One night.

Great work by our officers, traffic unit, and retail partners who continue working together to keep Port St. Lucie safe.

SUNDAY’S ATTEMPTED MURDER ARSON BWC RELEASE OF RESCUED VICTIM

With sirens blaring and what intensely began as a response to a domestic battery and residential fire… Officers quickly learned this 911 call was not an everyday call for service. As officers were in enroute and hearts pounding, it was learned this was an attempted murder.

In the wake of what is a very disturbing incident. We are happy to report, first and foremost, the victim is alive!

On behalf of Chief Niemczyk, we would like to acknowledge the bravery of the victim. Additionally, the officers who battled the blaze prior to firefighters arriving in efforts to save the victims’ life.

In total, three officers from this incident received medical care. Two for smoke inhalation and one for a leg injury due to the suspect.

The bravery of Officer Eric Theriault, K9 Officer Mitch Miller and Officer Morgan Green under the leadership of Sgt. Zamoyski exemplify what it means to wear PSLPD blue with privilege and pride.

As you will see in the bodycam footage, a victim was trapped inside a smoke-filled bedroom as flames rapidly spread throughout the home. Acknowledging the risk each officer took, they entered the residence and worked through thick smoke and dangerous conditions in a desperate search for the victim.

Inside, officers located the victim seeking refuge in a bathroom bathtub as the fire intensified around her. Officers were able to safely remove the victim from the home, undoubtedly saving her life.

As a result of the investigation, Michelle Picard was arrested and charged with:
▪️ Attempted Murder
▪️ Arson
▪️ Resisting Arrest

This incident serves as a reminder of the risks first responders face every day. While many see the flashing lights and uniforms, they don't always see the sacrifices made behind them.

We are grateful the victim survived, proud of the courage displayed by our officers and firefighters, and wish our injured officers a speedy recovery.

This is what service looks like. This is what courage looks like.

Today, the Port St. Lucie Police Department stands alongside our brothers and sisters of the St. Lucie County Fire District as they mourn the loss of one of their own.

Behind every badge is a person who chose a life of service, sacrifice, and commitment to others. They answered the call when their community needed them most and left an impact that will never be forgotten.

While this loss is felt most deeply by those who served beside them, it is a loss shared by all of us. The bonds that unite the public safety profession extend far beyond agency lines. We are one family, and when one of us grieves, we all grieve.

To the firefighter’s family, friends, and the entire St. Lucie County Fire District, please know that you do not walk through this difficult time alone. The men and women of PSLPD stand with you, mourn with you, and keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

May we honor their life, remember their service, and carry forward the legacy they leave behind.

One Mission. One Community. One Family.

🛒 Walmart Theft Suspect Arrested 🛒

On May 27, 2026, PSLPD officers responded to Walmart in St. Lucie West after Loss Prevention called 911 after observing a suspect selecting merchandise throughout the store and concealing the items inside two backpacks that had also been taken from the sales floor.

The suspect, later identified as 39-year-old Derrick Carlyle, then exited through an emergency door, bypassing all points of sale without attempting to pay for the merchandise.

Officers quickly detained the individual without incident and were found to be in possession of 59 stolen items with a total value exceeding $1,000!

The merchandise ranged from clothing and cosmetics to personal care products and electronics.

Carlyle was arrested and transported to SLC Jail without incident.

A reminder that organized retail theft and shoplifting offenses have real consequences. We appreciate the continued partnership of retail employees and loss prevention personnel who help keep our businesses safe.
