PRESCRIBED BURN PLANNED FOR STATE PARK
-Visitors likely to see prescribed burn this week-

PORT ST. LUCIE – The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Savannas Preserve State Park will conduct a prescribed burn on Monday, August 3rd, weather permitting. Savannas Preserve State Park's Main Entrance off Walton Rd. will be closed to visitors due the close proximity of the prescribed burn.

The prescribed burn will attempt to burn what was leftover from this past Friday's burn, which consisted of approximately 170 acres of mesic flatwoods north of Walton Road and east of the Sandhill Crane Park. Prescribed fires are only conducted when weather parameters are suitable. The final decision to burn is made daily, after reviewing the Predicted Fire Weather forecast for that particular day and after obtaining a burn authorization from the Florida Forest Service.

Prescribed burning mimics natural fire cycles to restore healthy forests and natural communities, reduce undergrowth that accumulates over time and decreases the potential for wildfire. Burned lands experience an increase in native wildflowers, birds and other wildlife.

Be extra vigiliant around ALL bodies of water now through September for alligator breeding season.

Warmer temperatures mean an increased metabolism for these remarkable reptiles. Momma Gators are espcially spicy right now as they are hangry and alert to protect their nests and hatchlings.

Humans may not be natural prey for alligators, but when opportunity strikes- so do the gators.

Archie, Peter, and Bailey delighted in the Springtime Dog Lovers Hike on May 2, 2026, walking 2.6 miles on the Yellow Trail loop, enjoying water breaks, and witnessing the playful Ibis and Herons. We will be taking a “paws” until September due to the hot weather. Remember to never leave your dog in the car, even with windows cracked! When walking, check the asphalt with the back of your hand. If it burns your hand, it is too hot for our fur buddies paws.

Saturday, April 4th Dog Lovers Hike - the weather was beautiful. The longer trail, spanning 2.7 miles, was particularly enjoyed by Kona, Clementine, Rosie, Peter, and Bailey. Please note our next scheduled hike will take place on May 2nd at 8:00 am, an earlier start time due to the warmer weather. We will be taking a summer hiatus and resuming our hikes in the fall.
