Fire Danger Level Raised to MODERATE
Due to current and forecast weather conditions, fuel moisture levels in area vegetation, and the available emergency response resources, the Jefferson County Fire Marshal’s Office and the Jefferson County Fire Chiefs have elevated the Fire Danger Level to MODERATE effective May 08, 2026.
Under a MODERATE Fire Danger Level, yard debris burning and land clearing burning are no longer allowed in Jefferson County. No further burn permits will be issued, and any active burn permits are suspended. Additionally, the use of propane w**d burners is no longer allowed.
At a MODERATE Fire Danger Level, residents are still allowed to use recreational wood fires, solid fuel cooking appliances, and gas or propane fueled appliances such as barbeques, flame tables, tiki torches, liquid fuel candles, or lanterns.
Precautions should always be taken when doing any outdoor burning including never leave any cooking or flaming device unattended, keep sufficient clearance from combustible materials such as vegetation, siding, fences, or other combustible items, and pay attention to children or pets around the fire.
As weather conditions continue to develop, we may raise the Fire Danger Level to HIGH, which further restricts recreational campfires and fireworks.
While we understand the impact this has on summer celebrations, we also have seen first-hand how quickly a small fire can spread, risking damage to homes, and potentially overwhelming our emergency response resources.
In 2025, we raised the Fire Danger Level to MODERATE on June 1st and raised to HIGH on June 25th. We remained at a HIGH fire danger level October 1st when we lowered to MODERATE. We stayed at MODERATE until October 15th.
