PORT TOWNSEND NEWS: Celebrate Aldrich’s reopening Saturday with ‘chalk art’ family activity during Farmers Market; multiple intersections to be closed

This Saturday, Oct. 10, the Port Townsend Farmers Market “warmly welcomes back our uptown neighbor,” Aldrich's Market. “In honor of their re-opening and in partnership with the City of Port Townsend Engage PT project, the Port Townsend Farmers Market will extend into the Lawrence and Tyler intersection. Join us for socially distanced chalk art-making, the Port Townsend Farmers Market, and the opening of Aldrich's.”

Aldrich’s Market reopens Saturday, Oct. 10 and is a special part of the day’s Port Townsend Farmers Market, which was closed April 30, reopens under new ownership: siblings Rachel, Christa and Yos Ligtenberg. Store hours are 8 am to 9 pm.

In celebration of their “uptown neighbor,” the Port Townsend Farmers Market (9 am to 1 pm Saturday) expands into the intersection of Lawrence and Tyler streets – the space between the market on Tyler and Aldrich’s front door – and up to Clay Street.

CHALK ART – WEATHER PERMITTING
The City of Port Townsend and the Port Townsend Public Library host a socially-distanced chalk art-making project on Lawrence Street in partnership with the Farmers Market. From 10 am to 12:30 pm Saturday, “folks are welcome to share their vision for the future through drawing on the road.” Spaces will be marked off, offering areas for households to draw together. The Library is providing chalk at the market, or people may bring their own chalk.

There are rules: wear a mask, remain at least 6 feet apart, and no more than 5 people in a group from the same household. “The City of Port Townsend reserves the right to remove any drawing that is inconsistent with the nature of the event and community standards. Art found to violate copyright or trademarks will be removed.

The City of Port Townsend is seeking chalk art submissions (photos) through Oct. 31. Submit to [email protected].

The chalk art is a weather-permitting activity. The National Weather Service calls for up to a half an inch of rain on Friday, followed by rain before 11 am Saturday, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11 am. Winds Saturday morning could gust as high as 21 mph.

TRAVEL ALERT
Street closures are planned from 7 am to 3:30 pm Oct. 10 at the intersections of Polk and Lawrence, Taylor and Lawrence, and Taylor and Garfield streets. Parking is available on Tyler and Lawrence after the street closures with the exception of the Polk and Lawrence intersection to make space for art-making on the street. The Tyler and Clay intersection remains open.
