Topsoil
Soil is the top
The top of the Earth itself
Topsoil
The one alive with microorganisms
Shaded by the greens
The one nurtured by the rains
The one
That nurtures
Us
Topsoil
Yet
That topsoil of the Earth
Is only a few inches deep
Vulnerable to wind gusts and dry spells
So vulnerable
To flooding
So vulnerable
To extreme temperatures
So vulnerable
To overuse
To monocultures
To synthetic chemicals
That kill
And kill
It!
Topsoil
Soil is the top
The top of the earth itself
Topsoil
Still
Although hurt and drying
In so many parts of the world in our day
Although hurt and drying
It is so easy
For each of us
In so many parts of the world
Like
Here
To revive it
A little every day
A little in many actions
To save our lives
That come from it
And to thank it
Topsoil
To thank it even for the milk we drink
By learning that organic materials such as those
We bring to compost
We too
Actually
Nurture
And
Revitalize it
To thank it for the fruits and vegetables we eat
With letting organic matter and time
Become soil again
On the top of the Earth
Topsoil
To thank it for the wooden house we live in
For the air we breathe
Both coming
From the trees that grow there
On the
Topsoil
To thank it for the rain
That its greens attract
And retain
And hold
On their way to the oceans
To thank it for the rain
That flows in my veins
With the water I drink from the rivers
And springs
Which greens bring to Earth
From the
Topsoil
Just one act today and tomorrow
Conscious of its humble
Generous gifts
Will insure
Life goes on
Or ends
For with the topsoil
All comes
And with the topsoil
All goes
Because we make our bodies
Little by little
With the food we eat
The food
We grow from the
Topsoil
Yet
That topsoil of the Earth
Is only a few inches deep
Vulnerable to wind gusts and dry spells
So vulnerable
To our doings
We breath
We feed
We live
We love
From the Earth’s
Topsoil
Let’s love it back
So we can live
So we can feed
So we can breath
As always
