WisDOT and the Wisconsin County Highway Association (WCHA) are urging motorists to give snowplows plenty of space while crews work to keep roads safe this winter.

According to WCHA, 13 county snowplows have been hit so far this winter. In many cases, snowplows are struck from behind, highlighting the need for drivers to remain alert, slow down, and leave extra room to brake in winter conditions. These crashes also force plows to go out of service, reducing the county’s ability to clear roads efficiently.

State law requires vehicles to stay back from a working snowplow by at least 200 feet on a road with a speed limit of more than 35 mph.

You ask, we answer: why don’t snowplows use more sand on state highways during the winter?

Sand is sometimes used for traction when temperatures are very cold and salt isn’t as effective. The overall benefits of sand are very minimal, as it has no ice melting properties. Sand is also easily displaced on higher speed roadways. The cost of sand can be more than salt when you factor in the higher application rates, costs of sweeping and disposal.

The Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous complaints from residents who live along routes used by data center construction traffic. These routes have primarily been on CTH KW and CTH A in the towns of Belgium and Fredonia and CTH A in the Village of Fredonia. As well as STH 33 in the town of Saukville and STH 57 in the town of Fredonia. In response, we have implemented directed patrols in these areas to monitor compliance and enforce traffic laws. We are trying to be visible in specific areas that have caused the most complaints.

We have also communicated directly with data center construction management, who have been cooperative. We have shared the concerns raised by residents and requested this information be passed along to their drivers. Our goal is voluntary compliance and improved driving along these routes.

Deputies are patrolling the affected areas daily on all three (3) shifts. Traffic stops are being conducted and enforcement action is being taken when violations are observed. We also want to acknowledge that many construction vehicles are operating in compliance with traffic laws, which we appreciate.

In addition, speed display trailers have been deployed to monitor speeds and provide a visual reminder to drivers in an effort to reduce speed. The Wisconsin State Patrol is assisting with enforcement, including monitoring truck weight limits and other traffic violations on these specific roadways.

When residents report concerns, providing a vehicle description and license plate number when possible allows deputies to address specific violations with drivers directly. Call our dispatch at 262-284-7172 if you would like to report a violation.

Our priority is keeping everyone safe on these and all roadways. Safe travel is possible when all drivers follow the traffic laws, so cooperation from everyone is important. Let’s keep our roadways safe!

The Highway guys had an opportunity to get together and golf in the 4th annual Highway Open. It's a great way for the guys to get together after work and also raise money for a great cause. This year the nonprofit we picked was Balance Inc. The guys raised just over $2,000. For more information on Balance, please visit balanceinc.org
