Port Washington Water District

Port Washington Water District It is our mission to provide our customers with an uninterrupted supply of the highest quality water All of our water comes from underground wells.

Here is an at-a-glance look at Port Washington Water District:

All PWWD Water comes from 12 District wells. All groundwater pumped to the distribution system from the operating District wells complies with New York State Department of Health standards for public drinking water. Port water is stored in 2 elevated tanks of 1 million and 250,000 gallon capacities each, and 2 underground tanks of 1 m

illion and 22 million gallons each. PWWD is one of the oldest water districts on Long Island, chartered in 1913. The District has approximately 147 miles of water mains ranging from 4" to 24" in diameter. The District has and maintains more than 1,250 Fire Hydrants throughout the District. The District serves an area of 6 square miles including Port Washington, Manorhaven, Port Washington North, Baxter Estates and parts of Flower Hill and Plandome Manor. Your District maintains emergency connection facilities with the Sands Point, Roslyn and Manhasset-Lakeville Water Districts. Your District serves an average of 9,250 customers with approximately 1.3 billion gallons of water annually. Every gallon of water consumed by District users is recorded by computer and billed accordingly. Unlike New York City, Long Island does not use reservoir water nor have a surface water system.

💧 Peak watering season approaching. Let’s use water wisely.

As temperatures rise, so does water demand. What you do at home plays a critical role in helping the Port Washington Water District reduce water use during peak pumping season.

Here’s how you can help:
✔️ Upgrade to a required smart irrigation controller to reduce water waste
✔️ Follow mandatory irrigation guidelines and cut back watering
✔️ Monitor your water use and check for leaks or overuse
✔️ Don’t set it and forget it—skip watering after rainfall
✔️ Get inspired at our Sustainable Garden Tour on June 13 🌿

💧🥯 Save the Bagel—Protect Our Water

Port Washington students are helping shine a light on a critical issue: how overuse of water (especially during peak irrigation season) increases strain on Long Island’s aquifer and contributes to saltwater intrusion.

This important initiative is led in part by Port Washington Water District Commissioner Mindy Germain, who commented, “Our groundwater is out of balance, and saltwater intrusion is advancing. We know many of the best practices already. What we don’t have is the scale and coordination needed to make a real impact.”

This reinforces what we see every summer: outdoor water use, particularly lawn irrigation, is one of the biggest drivers of demand. By following irrigation guidelines, installing required smart controllers, and reducing unnecessary watering, residents can play a direct role in protecting our water supply.

Excited to see our community leading the conversation on conservation and sustainability. Check out the full articles on this week's issues of Newsday and Long Island Press.

STB! is a public awareness initiative led by Residents Forward’s Youth Climate Action Program to spark conversation, education, and action to protect Long Island’s groundwater.

🌎💧 Happy Earth Day from the Port Washington Water District
Every day, we rely on a single, shared water source—our aquifer. Protecting it starts with simple actions at home.

From using smart irrigation controllers to reducing unnecessary water use, small changes can make a big impact on our community’s future.

Together, we can conserve water and protect Port Washington’s drinking water for generations to come.

Protecting Port Washington’s water starts in your yard. 💧

The Port Washington Water District is reminding residents that all automatic irrigation systems must now be equipped with a smart irrigation controller.

Smart controllers adjust watering based on weather and soil conditions—helping reduce water waste and protect Long Island’s aquifer.

If your system hasn’t been updated yet, please contact your irrigation contractor to schedule installation.

✔️ Confirm your compliance or report your installation timeline:
