As summer winds down and a new school year approaches, we had the opportunity this week to conduct our annual Stop the Bleed training with new staff from the Port Washington-Saukville School District. The training focuses on simple, hands-on skills that can help control life-threatening bleeding before help arrives. Thank you, PWSSD, for continuing to invite us to share this lifesaving training with your staff and for your ongoing commitment to keeping students safe.

For nearly 60 years, our current fire station has served as the home of the Port Washington Fire Department. This evening, we begin a new chapter as we move into the new Public Safety Building.

At 5:00 PM, there will be a “parade” of fire department apparatus as we make the move from 104 W. Washington Street to our new home at 1540 W. Grand Avenue. Once the apparatus are parked in their new bays, the new fire station will officially be operational.

You may still see some activity and apparatus at the old station over the next few weeks as we finish moving documents, supplies, and other non-operational items. We’re grateful to everyone who helped make this new facility a reality and appreciate the support we’ve received throughout the process.

Be sure to mark your calendars for October 11th for the official ribbon-cutting and open house. We look forward to sharing the new facility with the community.

Introducing the new Brush Truck 457! This 2025 Chevrolet 3500 HD replaces our 1992 GMC brush truck and will serve as the department's primary brush/wildland firefighting and quick attack vehicle.

Brush Truck 457 is equipped with a 35 HP Hale fire pump, a 225-gallon water tank, twin high-pressure hose reels, and 5 gallons of Class A firefighting foam. Designed for brush/wildland firefighting, it also serves as a quick attack vehicle for fires in areas that traditional fire apparatus cannot access. Despite its compact size, it is capable of supplying a standard 1¾-inch handline, allowing crews to operate with the same hose used on many structural fire incidents.

The truck is also equipped to tow the department's UTV, providing additional flexibility for transporting personnel, equipment, or patients in remote or difficult-to-access areas. It carries SCBA for the crew along with a variety of hand tools to support both structural and brush/wildland firefighting operations.

The pump installation and modifications were completed by Rennert's Fire Equipment, while much of the remaining work and customization was completed in-house by department personnel. The purchase of BT 457 was partially funded through the Wisconsin DNR Forest Fire Protection Grant.

Last month, the department had the opportunity to participate in a joint training exercise with the Wisconsin Air National Guard. The training gave their crews a chance to practice patient management and victim hoist techniques while allowing our personnel to continue building bluff rescue skills and gain valuable experience working alongside rotary-wing aircraft. Thanks to the Wisconsin Air National Guard for taking the time to train with us. It was a great experience, and we hope to do it again in the future.

Tonight, the department will be conducting the rescheduled training exercise in partnership with the Wisconsin Air National Guard. This training provides their crews with an opportunity to practice patient management while our personnel continue to develop bluff rescue skills and gain valuable experience working with rotary-wing aircraft. There is no emergency or public safety hazard associated with this activity. Residents may notice low-flying helicopters during the training. Tonight's exercise will take place in the area of Upper Lake Park. Community members are welcome to observe from a safe distance; however, the park will be closed during the training exercise, and access to the training area will be restricted.See less
