The area we now call Port Washington was occupied by the British for seven years during the Revolutionary War. Local families suffered immense hardship: they were forced to quarter enemy troops, had their children pressed into service, and even endured pirate attacks. Some Cow Neck Patriots bravely fought for American freedom while others assisted the revolutionary cause in secret – and some yet remained loyal to the Crown. These stories are explored in Cow Neck in the Revolution, presented in collaboration with the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society in celebration of 250 years of American independence. On display in the History Center Annex through December 2026. Join us for an opening reception on Thursday, June 11 at 3pm.

May is National Bicycle Month! 🚲 Before the advent of the automobile, bicycles were by far the fastest and easiest way to get around. Although first conceived in the early to mid-1800s, by the 1890s, innovations in comfort and safety ushered in a worldwide "Golden Age of Bicycles."

In Port Washington, bicycles were an extremely popular mode of transportation: locals and tourists alike frequented the Hyde Brothers' Shop opposite the Mill Pond, where bikes could be purchased or repaired, and in the 1920s, the first officers of the Port Washington Police District cycled around town on their patrols.

This photograph of the Reid family, taken near their home on Bayview Avenue around 1895, shows John Van Pelt Wicks and his wife on bicycles typical of the day. The headlamps seen on the front of these bikes were actually powered by kerosene, which was not terribly effective: it could only produce a dim, orange light, the glass needed to be cleaned frequently due to soot accumulation, and the kerosene put out dangerous and smelly fumes.

Wishing all a very happy Mother's Day weekend! 💐
Emma Leiber and her husband, William, purchased their home at 44 Second Avenue in Port Washington in 1903 and made it their permanent residence in 1911. Their son, William Jr. (whom they called "Willie"), was born in 1908. The Leiber Family Papers, housed in the archives of The History Center at the Port Washington Public Library, include many photographs of Emma and Willie throughout his childhood. Emma's deep love for her son can be felt in every image of them together.
