Long Island Life and Politics recently announced the great news that Nassau County’s Department of Public Works is proceeding with applications for permits to dredge Baxter’s Pond—a longtime priority for the Baxter’s Pond Foundation and Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Delia DeRiggi-Whitton.

“We’re thrilled by the news that Nassau County is moving forward with plans to dredge Baxter’s Pond, which has long been a top priority for the Baxter’s Pond Foundation,” said Kim Keiserman, co-president of the Baxter’s Pond Foundation. “The main pond has not been cleaned out for decades, and its depth is reduced to just a few inches in many areas. Dredging will greatly improve the pond’s capacity to accommodate storm runoff, its water quality, its ecosystem, and its appearance.”

“By working collaboratively, Nassau County, our partners in  government, and local community organizations are making tremendous progress toward the completion of improvements that will secure Shore Road, address persistent flooding issues, and improve our overall quality of life,” DeRiggi-Whitton said. “Dredging Baxter Pond will make our communities safer and protect a cherished North Shore ecological gem for all of us to enjoy.”

The Baxter’s Pond Foundation was pleased to take part in last weekend’s Commendation Ceremony for the interns from the ReWild Long Island Summer Program to Fight Hunger and Climate Change.

This was our second year taking part, and our goal for the summer was to increase the aesthetic appeal of the pond’s public gardens along with their biodiversity. In other words, we wanted to make the pond more beautiful with native plants. With the interns’ help, we planted dozens of native plants throughout the park and kept them watered, pulled huge numbers of invasives, picked up many bags of litter, and created a rock garden with rocks painted by the interns.  We would not have been able to get any of this done without the wonderful young people who came to Baxter’s Pond ready to learn and work. We’re grateful to each and every one of them.

Special shout out to Janna and Sumaya for leading us in creating our rock garden. And a big thank you to our student mentors, Jay and Lucy. Knowledgeable and organized, they helped us stay prepared and on task while ensuring we had the equipment we needed.
