Greenways & Blueways of Northwest Indiana

Greenways & Blueways of Northwest Indiana Northwest Indiana has an ever-growing network of both land and water trails. This page will provide regular updates on their continued expansion, associated endeavors and how YOU can get involved!

The Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC) is a multi-purpose, sub-state, area-wide planning agency. NIRPC was originally established as the Lake-Porter County Regional Transportation and Planning Commission in 1965, pursuant to State-enabling legislation. An amendment to this legislation in 1973 provided the Commission with its current name and allowed for the addition of new member counties. Under this provision, La Porte County joined NIRPC in 1979.

Amazing river restoration project wrapping up on Deep River in Lake Station. This involved removing an 80-yr old dam (last picture) and replacing it with a “rock riffle” design that mimics the elevation of the dam, but allows fish to spawn upstream and access for canoes and kayaks. Part of this project is the installation of a bike/ped bridge over the river, connecting to Three Rivers County Park and Bellaboo’s.

NIPRC congratulates the Little Calumet River Basin Development Commission, and a host of other partners, on this fantastic improvement! #RegionProud

Congrats to the City of La Porte for making water access available for ALL levels of ability!

Access to our lakes for water-based recreational activities has been very limited for those with physical challenges. Thanks to funding from the Healthcare Foundation of La Porte, we are installing an ADA-compliant kayak launch on Stone Lake. Located between Cummings Lodge and the beach, the project includes a paved ramp to the pier/launch, a drop-off zone and a newly paved parking lot. We expect work on the project, which also allows access for other small watercraft such as canoes, to be completed this spring. #LivinTheLakeLife #LaPorteProud

There were a number of questions about the exact location of the new Singing Sands Trail in Michigan City. We hope this map will help you understand the route, which in total is 4.2 miles, and utilizes an existing, but isolated, 1.1 mile trail which goes over Trail Creek. As the map shows, this will continue to connect eastward to New Buffalo as part of the three-state Marquette Greenway initiative. #MoreMiles

Looks like new trails in Indiana will also have to wait through this crisis...

In response to the sharp decline in state revenues caused by the economic impact of COVID-19, the State of Indiana today announced cost savings measures implemented across state government intended to preserve critical government services for Hoosiers. A copy of the press release is provided below.

In light of this, we regret to inform you that the 2nd and 3rd rounds of Next Level Trails funding are on hold.

We appreciate the effort and passion poured into each and every application submitted for consideration. Thank you for your dedication to improving access to trails in your community.

Thank you,
Next Level Trails Team

I’ve been riding my bike around and I see so many high line power lines and thought nipsco should make an access road/ bike path on the easements of this property. The bike paths that would exist if that happened would make it so much safer to ride.
Is there an updated comprehensive map available that show all of the improved trails?
Shout out to Town of Merrillville for paving their section or the Erie Lackawanna bike path! Great ride today!
