As our region emerges from the "Derecho of '26," NIRPC applauds the generocity and resilience of our municipalities and residents as we collectively clear up from this massive storm event. We also thank NIPSCO for doing their best to restore power and recruit other utility companies to share the load. This storm has demonstrated how our region can come together and assist each other when needed - much like the Merrillville tornado event from a couple of months ago. We look forward to working with all of our entities in Lake, Porter and La Porte counties to aid with strategies to us cope with future natural disasters.

Shirley Heinze and partners have launched a pilot project to survey aquatic barriers, such as culverts and dams, within the region. The goal is to catalogue infrastructure to identify potential aquatic barriers or structures that may be eligible for removal or replacement. Volunteers are essential to the success of this project. We’re looking for people who are curious about and excited to learn more about the health of their local waterways to help make this work possible.

This pilot program is offered for three days, June 26-28, with a special catered dinner to celebrate those who participate in all three days of survey. Each volunteer day will take place from 10 am to 2 pm. To learn more and sign up, please visit: https://ow.ly/U4Tg50ZgmxP

MORE MILES! Major congrats to both the Towns of Highland and Munster on the long-awaited opening of the "Bridges over Ditches" project! This now formally opens the Highland-Munster Pathway connecting the Pennsy Greenway to the Erie-Lackawanna Trail via Lincoln St. in Highland. In Munster, there is an existing separated path along a NIPSCO utility corridor, and special thanks to them to leasing the land for the project at no cost to the communities. To date, over 30 miles of regional trail are on NIPSCO-owned land.

This critical 3.2 mile link will connect tens of thousands of nearby residents to each community and help them safely access nearby Wicker Park, which is a popular destination for bikes and peds. The link will also be part of the national American Discovery Trail.
