The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest veterans service organization, committed to mentoring and sponsorship of youth programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting a strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service members an

d veterans. In contrast to other veterans organizations, the Legion offers a number of local programs and activities to strengthen its commitment to our nation’s grass roots and the people we serve. American Legion Baseball is one of the nation’s most successful amateur athletic programs; it continues to educate youths on the importance of sportsmanship and develops the quality of our country’s citizenship. The Heroes to Hometowns program is the only nationwide reintegration assistance service for wounded veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. Additionally, millions of dollars in donations have been given to fellow veterans and their families in times of grief, and various scholarship opportunities ensure the future success of our youth. The American Legion is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization with great political influence perpetuated by its grass-roots involvements in the legislation process. Legionnaires’ sense of obligation to their community, state and nation drives an honest advocacy for veterans in Washington. The Legion stands not behind politics, but the issues and people that institute progress by focusing on veterans rights and quality of life. The American Legion’s success depends entirely on active membership, participation and volunteerism. The organization belongs to the people it serves and the communities in which it thrives.

Today, June 2, we recognize Lou Gehrig Day.

Known as the “Iron Horse,” Lou Gehrig was one of baseball’s greatest players, but his legacy extends far beyond the diamond. His courage, humility, and perseverance in the face of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) continue to inspire generations.

Lou Gehrig Day is observed each year on June 2 to honor his life and legacy, raise awareness of ALS, and remember all those who have battled this devastating disease. The American Legion also recognizes the many veterans and military families who have been affected by ALS.

As Lou Gehrig famously said in his farewell speech, he considered himself “the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” Even in the face of unimaginable adversity, he chose gratitude, courage, and dignity.

Today, we remember Lou Gehrig, honor those living with ALS, support the search for a cure, and keep faith with all veterans and families affected by this disease.

Today, American Legion Post 260 honors the memory of Frank Gilbert Jr., a dedicated public servant whose life was defined by service to both his country and his community.

Frank proudly served as a United States Navy Hospital Corpsman and remained an active member of the U.S. Naval Reserve, assigned to the Marine Corps throughout his military service. As every Marine knows, Corpsmen are more than medical professionals.❤️

His commitment to helping others extended beyond his military service through his work as a firefighter and paramedic for the City of Portage. Whether in uniform or serving his hometown, Frank answered the call whenever others were in need.

Today, we remember a Corpsman, a Reservist, a firefighter, a paramedic, and a proud American whose service will never be forgotten.

🇺🇸 Fair winds and following seas, Shipmate. Semper Fidelis. 🇺🇸

Congratulations to Bruce on being featured in “Life in the Spotlight” by Portage.Life. This recognition is incredibly well deserved.

Thank you, Bruce, for a lifetime of service to veterans, to The American Legion, and to the Portage community. We are proud to call you one of our own. 🇺🇸

There are many criteria for being a good citizen, and lifelong Portage resident Bruce Thorn meets them all. Thorn was born and raised in Portage alongside five brothers. His childhood and young adulthood spanned a turbulent time in America; the 1950s were gripped by the Cold War, and the 1960s were....

City of Portage hosted its Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 25th 2026.

05/25/2026

This Memorial Day, we remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Their sacrifice is the foundation of our freedom. Today, we honor them, not just in words, but in how we live, serve, and support one another.

Today, members of the American Legion Post 260 family, Portage High School JROTC & Football team, and several others from our community placed flags on the graves of veterans at Calvary Cemetery, Blake Road Cemetery & Robbins Road Cemetery ahead of Memorial Day.

While walking the cemetery, a young member of our Sons of The American Legion Squadron 260 placed a flag at the grave of Sgt. Michael Francis Murray, United States Marine Corps.

Sgt. Murray was killed in action during the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945 at just 23 years old.

For his extraordinary heroism in combat, he was awarded the Navy Cross, the second highest military decoration awarded for valor in combat. His citation tells the story of a Marine who repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire, led attacks against heavily fortified Japanese positions, and continued fighting with complete disregard for his own safety in order to protect his fellow Marines and accomplish the mission.

He made the ultimate sacrifice on one of the bloodiest battlefields in American history. And today, he rests here in Portage, Indiana.

This is what Memorial Day is about. Not cookouts. Not sales. Not a long weekend.

It is about remembering heroes like Sgt. Michael Murray. Men who gave everything for this country so future generations could live free.

May we never forget their names.
May we never forget their sacrifice.
And may we always teach the next generation what these flags truly represent. 🇺🇸
