MEET THE ARTIST: I am Dee "White Wolf" Croaker, Crane clan and a member of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe in Minnesota residing in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Art, in its various forms, has been a part of my life as long as I can remember. I recall learning various crafts and music with my mom, family friends, and through community classes.
I put art on hold while raising my child, and after he was grown and my mom passed, I found my way back to art again in an effort to navigate my grief and cover funeral expenses. What started as $40 in fabric at JoAnn's has led me on a journey of self discovery, healing, and learning.
With inner reflection, color, and texture, art has brought me on a journey to heal from the past. I have not only found myself, but have found a way to express what is inside. Combining techniques and beads found across Turtle Island and generations, I bring them together to tell a story of a little girl born and raised on the Leech Lake Reservation growing up unsure of her place in this big world. Whether it's unique jewelry collections combined with photography and art, or canvas paintings adorned with pieces of beadwork, I am finding a way to tell my story.
