This morning at approximately 7:15am, Laporte County Sheriff’s Deputy Jon Samuelson was shot 3 times in the line of duty during an incident inside Michigan City’s Franciscan Health hospital.

Deputy Samuelson was airlifted to South Bend Memorial Hospital in critical condition where he is undergoing surgery.

The suspect has been arrested and is being housed at the Porter County Jail.

The officers of the Portage Police Department will be keeping Deputy Samuelson, his family, and the officers of the Laporte County Sheriff's Department in our thoughts and prayers.

During National Police Week, we pause to recognize and honor the dedication, sacrifice, and service of the law enforcement officers who protect our communities each and every day.

At the MAAC Foundation, we are proud to support the training and preparedness of these brave men and women. Their commitment to public safety strengthens our communities across Northwest Indiana and beyond.

This week especially, we remember the officers who have given their lives in the line of duty and stand in gratitude with those who continue to serve with courage and professionalism.

Today our K9 Unit accompanied Detective Sgt Dandurand to the Portage Coyne Veterinary Clinic for retired K9 Nakir's final goodbye. We will all miss Nakir and offer our condolences to Sgt Dandurand and his family. Nakir was such a sweet boy, and great partner. We would also like to thank Coyne and their wonderful team for their generosity and help during this difficult time.
