Tonight Rotarians fed 270 hungry WMU Bronco Marching Band students, 290 with staff! The football team gets catering during practice season but the band gets forgotten when they are also practicing just as hard! With help from generous donations from Gordon Water Systems, Domino's Pizza, Jet's Pizza, Aunt Millie's Bread, The Park Club, Lakeland Reformed Church and GG Sweets plus 400 hot dogs wrapped with love by Rotarian Bonnie, all bellies were full. Thank you to everyone who made today possible especially Tiana Gee who brought this opportunity to the club. Next year we hope to make this a collaboration between multiple clubs. GO BRONCOS! 💛🤎

We often see headlines in the news "Homeless population growing" or "Homeless encampment gets swept, but do we ever stop to think about who cares for this extremely medically vulnerable population? Rotary Club of Portage had the honor of having Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine Street Med program present last November. We awarded them one of our club small grants for $750. Since then, our club has realized the amazing impact this team has. Not only are they providing medical care but they supply basic necessities for and more importantly, stability in a very volatile environment.

Unhoused look to the Street Med Team for a variety of supports from mental health and substance use peer support to chronic conditions we all face like high blood pressure or diabetes. They know where to find a smiling, non-judgemental, kind face whenever they are in need for something as simple as a bandaid or as complex as case management and specialty referrals.

Today we gave a cliché big check that will have an even BIGGER impact! $5,000 will fix and upgrade the HVAC in the outreach van. Currently the AC is not functioning. Imagine getting your regular doctor's exam in a closed van with no AC on a 90+ degree day. In the winter, the heat works sporadically and scorches if you get too close. These are both safety and quality of life concerns. Our Sandlin Grant money, $2500 from our club and $2500 from Rotary District 6360 Michigan USA , will impact lives for years to come! Today's meeting was jam packed with Rotary Jeopardy fun! (Photos to come) But the highlight was three Paul Harris Fellows...not first timers, or even Paul Harris x2. We had TWO Paul Harris x3 meaning that they have donated $3000 to the Rotary International Foundation and one Paul Harris x4, donating $4,000! Congratulations Randy Orwig, Steve Montanye and Shirley Johnson!

These donations go to the Rotary Foundation to be invested and "marinate" for 3 years. After 3 years, 50% goes to the World Fund for global programs and 50% comes back to us available through District Designated Funds (aka-grants). This cycle is how Portage Community Center received their funds in Randy's Rotary year.
