Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission

Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission NIRPC is the Metropolitan Planning Organization and regional council of local governments for Northwest Indiana.

NIRPC’s purpose is to “provide a coordinative management process for Lake, Porter, and LaPorte Counties. NIRPC is a regional council of local governments serving the citizens of Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties in Northwest Indiana. The Northwest Indiana region is part of the U.S. Census Bureau's Chicago Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). NIRPC provides a forum that enables the citizens of Nor

thwest Indiana to address regional issues relating to transportation, the environment and community, and economic development. NIRPC, as a recipient of federal funds, is subject to the requirements of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended, and the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). Title VI prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, creed and national origin. The ADA prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability.

Happy National Trails Day part 2: Marquette Greenway ribbon cutting! Today the National Park Service, together with the City of Gary opened up a 2.4 mile of the MG from the Douglas Environmental Center east to County Line Road. This is the first phase of three connecting the MG through the Indiana Dunes National Park. Happy National Trails Day part 1: Marquette Greenway groundbreaking! Yesterday officials from Burns Harbor, Porter and the National Park broke ground on a two-mile section of the MG. Once finished laters this year, it will be part of a contiguous 9-mile segment of the MG from State Road 249 to the entrance of the Indiana Dunes State Park. Join us in Gary on National Trails Day, Saturday, June 6th for TWO events! From 11AM to 2PM a celebration will take place at the future GaryELevated trailhead with tours of the old railroad including a bike rodeo teaching kids bicycle safety and riding tips. A mural will also be painted on the two bridge piers over Massachusetts St.

Following at 3PM will be the ribbon cutting event for the newest section of the Marquette Greenway in the Indiana Dunes National Park. This will take place at the Douglas Center for Environmental Education. Please see the graphic for addresses to each event.

Economic and demographic shifts continually and increasingly test communities of all sizes. To remain relevant and to thrive, community leaders must tackle challenges and pursue opportunities in a comprehensive and creative way.

Experts with decades of community development experience lead participants through seven core sessions over 2.5 days with exercises and conversations facilitated throughout. This training is designed for elected officials, community leaders, engaged citizens, and anyone who is passionate about where they live and dedicated to making it even better.
