It was a monster of a meet-up!

On Wednesday, May 20, 2026, Bartels Middle School 8th grade art students headed to Woodridge Primary School to meet with some of the Woodridge students who had participated in the annual monster exchange.

For the past few years, Woodridge students have been drawing monsters for Mrs. Martens. She then would share them with the BMS art teacher, first with Mrs. Doro and now with Mrs. Mars Fritz. These photos were then transformed from the 2 dimensional drawing to a 3 dimensional creature by BMS 8th grade art students.

This year, that 3 dimensional piece was a soft monster sewn pillow of sorts.

As has become tradition, the 8th graders meet with the original monster artists, the Woodridge students, and present their 3 dimensional monster to them. If there is time at the end of this exchange, students hang out together and color monster pictures or read monster books - before the 8th graders head back to class at BMS.

As you can see, everyone had a monster of a good time!

PHS family and friends barely missed the rain this morning as PHS German students got on the bus and headed to Chicago for their flight to Germany later on today.

If you remember back to last fall, PHS students and families hosted German exchange students from Gütersloh. For three weeks, these students and families introduced the German students to all things Portage High School and surrounding communities. Now, it is time for our students to visit their friends in Germany.

We wish these students and Herr und Frau Wick the very best adventures and safe travels as the begin their three weeks as exchange students.

Hab eine wunderbare Zeit!

What do you get when you take some model magic clay and some shaving cream and you mix it altogether?

Homemade slime - and a lot of giggles if you've got elementary school students making it!

That's exactly what happened in the John Muir Elementary School art room last month when Ms. Awaehsaeh and Ms. Maxted brought some JM students together for this fun activity!
