Please share. This is so important for our city!!

We are getting sooooooo close.
Nearly 75 percent of Portage residents have responded to the 2020 U.S. Census. We need to boost that number as we head into the final stretch of the count, which ends Sept. 30.
Why is important? The U.S. Census data is used for so many things, including the distribution of more than $600 billion in federal funds each year.
That's money for our police and fire departments, our parks, our schools and so much more.
If you've completed the Census, thank you.
If you haven't, you still have time. Please go to my2020census.gov/ to complete the quick and easy form and get counted. We thank you. Your neighbors thank you.

Thank you to all who helped this clean up!!!

The National Weather Service has issued a beach hazards statement beginning tonight and through Saturday night. Please stay out of the water.

...BEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT IN EFFECT FROM LATE TONIGHT THROUGH LATE SATURDAY NIGHT...

The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a Beach
Hazards Statement...which is in effect from late tonight through
late Saturday night.

* LOCATION...Lake and Porter County shores of northwest Indiana.

* HIGH WAVE ACTION AND DANGEROUS SWIMMING CONDITIONS EXPECTED.

* FORECAST WAVE HEIGHTS...3 to 6 feet increasing to 5 to 8 feet.

* STRONG RIP CURRENTS AND STRUCTURAL CURRENTS EXPECTED.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Remain out of the water to avoid dangerous swimming conditions
and do not venture out onto piers, jetties, breakwalls, or other
shoreline structures. Please check with your local authorities on
potential beach closures.

Be aware of this closure. It will help our beach area.
08/27/2020

Be aware of this closure. It will help our beach area.

ATTENTION: Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk Beach is Temporarily Closed for 3 weeks. The parking lot and pavilion area is still open. Please plan accordingly. Beach nourishment is scheduled to begin on August 27th at Indiana Dunes National Park’s Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk area. This work, sometimes called sand nourishment, involves placing dredged sand, obtained from other locations, onto beaches to repair damage caused by erosion.

While the public is invited to watch the work from the safety of the pavilion, the beach will be temporarily closed so heavy equipment can safely move the sand into place. The rest of Portage Lakefront, including the pavilion, the Dig the Dunes Trail Stop food operation, breakwater, riverwalk and hiking trail will remain open. Work is expected to take at least three weeks.

This project has been funded through the reallocation of operating funds at Indiana Dunes National Park. While the beach nourishment method normally must be repeated over time, this demonstration project will help prove the concept that sand nourishment is the most effective and environmentally appropriate solution to beach erosion and, unlike rock walls or shoreline armoring techniques, does not cause damage to neighboring stretches of beach.

For more information on beach access at Indiana Dunes National Park, contact the park’s information desk at 219-395-1882 or go to the web page at nps.gov/indu. For up to date information on available beach parking, call 219-395-1003.

Each year the federal government distributes more than $675 billion to states and communities based on Census data.
That's money for our roads, our fire, police and park departments, our schools and so much more.
As of this week Portage has a 71 percent response rate. We're ranking 83rd in the state. We can do better. By responding we can bring more of those federal tax dollars back home.
If you haven't responded, you can still do so by mail, on the phone or on the U.S. Census website at https://2020census.gov/en.html.

Thank you Portage Fire Department for keeping us safe.

You may have seen PFD crews deploying large numbers of hose lines this week with no fire in site. We are completing yearly hose testing over several days this week. This hose testing is important for you and our safety.

Equipment failure can result in catastrophic injury to responders, bystanders or both. Routine testing of fire hose, couplings, appliances and nozzles is necessary to provide a reasonable level of safety for users and to increase the likelihood the equipment will perform as designed.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1962, Standard for the Care, Use, Inspection, Service Testing, and Replacement of Fire Hose, Couplings, Nozzles, and Fire Hose Appliance provides guidance on acceptable procedures for testing these vital pieces of equipment and reducing the potential for an unfortunate incident to occur.
