Today we celebrate 140 years since Portia, Arkansas officially became an incorporated town on May 19, 1886.
Portia was founded during the expansion of the railroad through Northeast Arkansas in the late 1800s. Like many small towns of that era, the railroad played a major role in bringing growth, businesses, and new families to the area. The town was named after Portia, the wife of a railroad official connected to the development of the community.
In its early years, Portia became a busy stop for trade and travel throughout Lawrence County. Agriculture helped shape the town’s economy, while local businesses, schools, churches, and community gatherings became an important part of everyday life for generations of residents.
Over the last 140 years, Portia has seen many changes, challenges, and milestones, but it remains a town with deep roots and a history worth remembering. From the families who helped build it to the people who continue to call it home today, Portia’s story is an important part of Lawrence County history.
Happy 140th Anniversary, Portia! ❤️
