Alano Club of Portland

Alano Club of Portland A welcome, compassionate and accessible recovery center!

The Alano Club of Portland has been a leading source of recovery support in our community for 60 years and counting. In addition to over 100 weekly mutual aid support meetings, the Alano Club offers other recovery resources, like weekly recovery yoga and mindful meditation classes, monthly seminars on topics like brain chemistry and addiction, relationships in recovery, and regular workshops on to

pics ranging from recovery advocacy to mindful-based relapse prevention. The Alano Club also hosts large-scale sober social events, like our Recovery Art Walk, Recovery Talent Show and holiday community dinners. What We Do:
By owning and operating a beautiful, historic community center that hosts the largest and most diverse offering of mutual-aid support meetings and recovery services in Oregon, the Alano Club of Portland is able to bring healing, hope and solutions to more than 10,000 visitors each month. There’s no other recovery support center of its kind in the area, where recovering individuals can go—free of charge—to receive the level of life-long support they need in their journey to addiction recovery. Ours is a safe, loving and inviting home for more than 100 weekly recovery support meetings, recovery seminars and workshops, yoga and meditation classes, sobriety-based social events, information and referral services for treatment resources, and holiday celebrations for the recovery community. Who We Help
We serve thousands of recovering men, women and families across 20 distinct mutual aid programs, including Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon family groups, Gamblers Anonymous, Food Addicts Anonymous, Wellbriety, Refuge Recovery and nearly everything in between!

We are now just shy of a month away from The Recovery Gym’s third annual Power of Recovery fundraiser. On August 8th, TRG members and their teams will hit the floor & complete a power clean or full clean as a symbol of the inner AND outer strength that recovery demands.

At TRG, we pride ourselves on being a support system ready to spot you on the bench and off. Because in recovery, we’re stronger together. This year our goal is $10,000. Support today by contributing a donation through the link in our bio and cheer on our heavy lifters on August 8th. Your support will help TRG continue to offer cost-free recovery programming and trauma-informed coaching for adults and adolescents across the Portland Metro Area.

Last night at Bishop & Wilde, our Community Reading Series was joined by returning faces as well as eager new ones. Readers shared work written earlier that day and poems from their mother’s hand-bound journal decades ago. No session is the same but each month we leave Bishop & Wilde a little lighter and grateful for this community of writers. See you in August!

Coming up Monday July 20th, Kaveh Akbar—author of Martyr! (Penguine Random House, 2024), the NYT bestseller and National Book Award finalist—returns to the Alano Club with The Break.

The Break is a monthly virtual gathering of writers and artists lead by Akbar, celebrating amongness, collaboration, and interdisciplinary creative experimentation. Though many of the activities and discussions orbit or are inflected by recovery themes (Akbar has been in active recovery for eight years), participants are not required to self-identify as being in recovery to participate.

Join the workshop July 20th at 5pm PT / 8pm ET. Visit the Classes and Programs page on Alano Club website to learn more, and access The Break Zoom link.

We are thrilled to announce that we have a new Peer-led workshop! You can now join us in the Alano Club café every Tuesday from 4-6pm for Transitions Lab. Transitions Lab is a weekly peer-supported workspace that helps people in early recovery take practical steps towards stability and independence. Designed for individuals navigating housing, employment, and life transitions, the lab provides dedicated time and space to work on resumes, apply for housing, complete applications and move forward on real-world goals with support close at hand.

Participants can access on-site staff, peer mentors, and resource navigation - ensuring no one has to tackle these tasks alone. The lab offers a calm, welcoming environment where individuals feel equipped, encouraged, and connected as they build momentum in their recovery journey.

Last night at Portland Cookshop, Patrick McKee, chef and owner of Estes Ristorante, taught us how to make Cacio e Pepe.

Made with just a few simple ingredients—mostly cheese and pepper as the name suggests—McKee’s family recipe has stood the test of time several generations and continents over. Like McKee, Cacio e Pepe has roots in Rome and is thought to have originated as a cheap, efficient, and non-perishable dish for nourishing shephards on the move. Today, the dish remains just as cost-effective as it is comforting.

And as always, Anne brought flowers from her garden.

Please join us at Cookshop on the last Tuesday of every month for Plates for the People! Chef Patrick McKee (Estes) has returned to Plates for the People in a series of free, monthly cooking classes for people in or seeking recovery.

Plates for the people began in 2019, when the Alano Club of Portland and the Portland chapter of Ben’s Friends partnered with Cookshop and some of the country’s best chefs—including Gregory Gourdet, Tommy Habetz, Patrick McKee, Marcus Oliver, Gabriel Rucker and more—to bring the recovery community free, accessible classes where students learn about budgeting, meal planning, and how to cooking delicious, healthy dinners they can repurpose for multiple meals to feed themselves and others. Each class begins with the visiting chef sharing about their own journey with cooking and recovery, and concludes with the chef and students sharing a meal, and their stories, with each other.
