“Si me matan... Yo sacaré mis brazos de la tumba y seré más fuerte.“
“If they kill me… I'll reach my arms out through my tomb and I'll be even
stronger.” -Minerva Mirabal
62 years ago today - Patria, Minerva and Maria Teresa Mirabal also known as “Las Mariposas” were murdered in the Dominican Republic by agents of the country’s dictator Rafael Trujillo. The three sisters were vibrant political activists who publicly spoke out against the Trujillo regime. Their deaths drove the anti-Trujillo movement to new strengths, and activated transnational organizing, mobilization and collective solidarity. In 1991, to pay homage to Las Mariposas - November 25th was declared the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Today also marks the beginning of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence - an international campaign that runs every year for 16 days, starting November 25th to December 10th (Human Rights Day) and includes several other important days.
As current women organizers, we hold their memory close to our chests as we continue their work. We study their stories. We learn their lessons. We know that women in the movement are subject to particularly brutal political repression but we also know that women have the potential to change the course of history. We women face the most risk while engaging in movements, but we also have the capacity to transform entire nations with our struggle.
