🌧️✨ DID YOU KNOW DOLLY PARTON WROTE A SONG ABOUT EUGENE, OREGON — AND KEPT IT SECRET FOR 37 YEARS?

Here is one of the most heartwarming, least-known stories in country music history — and it belongs entirely to Oregon.

It was February 1972. Dolly Parton was on tour with Porter Wagoner — one of the biggest names in country music at the time — and the tour rolled into Eugene, Oregon. She had been homesick for Tennessee and had been physically ill. She skipped a couple of evenings of performances leading up to the show and sat in the back of the tour bus crying during the first part of the Eugene concert.

She almost did not go on.

But she pushed through. And what happened next changed her — permanently.

After performing "Coat of Many Colors," she received her first standing ovation as a musician in little old Eugene, Oregon.

About 1,500 people in a modest Oregon venue gave a homesick country girl from the East Tennessee hills the kind of welcome she had never experienced before. The crowd brought her to her feet. The *Register-Guard* reviewed the show under the headline: "Dolly Parton's Down Home Music Brings Eugene Fans to Their Feet."

She was so moved by the way the community accepted her that she wrote a song called "Eugene Oregon."

And then she held onto it. For 37 years.

The song wasn't released until 2009 — more than 35 years later — when it appeared on a 4-CD deluxe box set titled "Dolly," the first-ever compilation of her entire life's work across all music labels. The set featured 99 songs and seven never-before-released tracks, with "Eugene Oregon" among them. The song had been recorded during the RCA Studios Nashville sessions of December 1972 — recorded just months after that concert.

She didn't need to release a song about Eugene, Oregon by 2009. She was already one of the most celebrated artists in American history — 25 number one hits, 57 Top 10 country songs, the most chart hits of any female artist in country music history. She could have left that song in the vault forever and nobody would have known the difference.

But she didn't. Because Eugene mattered to her. All those years later she still had that connection to the place.

The opening lines of the song say everything:

"Eugene, Oregon, I'll remember you the rest of my life. I won't forget how good you were to me. No, I won't be forgetting all the kindness that you showed to a homesick country girl a long, long way from Tennessee."

The song has since found a new life — the Oregon Ducks began playing "Eugene Oregon" at Autzen Stadium after home wins, making Dolly Parton's tribute to a vulnerable winter night in 1972 part of the soundtrack of Oregon Ducks football.

In 2026, the Eugene Symphony honored the connection further with a symphonic performance titled "Dolly Parton's Threads: My Songs in Symphony" — bringing the story of that 1972 concert full circle more than fifty years later.

This is what Oregon does. It shows up for people when they need it most. A homesick girl a long way from Tennessee walked onto a stage she almost skipped — and the people of Eugene, Oregon gave her a standing ovation that she carried with her for the rest of her life.

And she never forgot us.
