We decided to watch the parade from the sidelines this year for her 250th birthday and it was awesome!! Thank you to everyone who worked to put it together and everyone who participated. It was my niece's 1st parade and she LOVED it!

After a loooonnngggg weekend with a ton of help from my husband, all three of my kids, and Portland residents Kelly and Laerke and their children, the community garden is up and running! We can't wait for even more residents to join in.

My husband managed to complete the fence, so the deer will be losing their opportunity to loot. 🦌

It was awesome working together, learning all the gardening wisdom that Laerke shared, and seeing what we can grow this year.
Anyone who would like to chip in some time to help maintain the garden is welcome to reap the rewards. Just let me know!

We have tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, beans, and more...

A huge thank you to the Thriving Earth Exchange program run by American Geophysical Union (AGU) and Nurture Nature Center for funding this amazing project for our community. Thank you also to my Community Science Fellow, Monika Giri, who helped make my idea a reality, to Laerke and Kelly for putting together the workshop, the planting materials and an instructional video that will follow shortly, to Kaiser's Mulch for making the delivery of the soil and mulch happen so quickly and Thomas Greenhouse & Country Store for providing us a great variety of vegetable plants at a discount for such a great cause!

There is still more to do, but we're off to a great start! 🌱🥒🍅

Calling all Portland residents — we have a few spots left for a free hands-on gardening workshop led by local residents Kelly and Laerke Thornton!

To receive the welcome package, you must register ASAP whether you want the full experience or just the workshop itself!

This is a great opportunity for you to start learning the basics of growing your own healthy food, right here in our community. Individuals and families welcome! Each registered person/family will receive a small plot to plant and grow seedlings of their choice. (provided)

Looking ahead, next year the full garden infrastructure will be completed and rolled out to the community in a whole new way by Councilman Thornton and his family!

🌱 FINALLY! The Portland Community Garden is officially happening! 🌱

I am so excited to announce that after months of hard work behind the scenes, the Portland Community Garden is almost ready 🎉

Thanks to a generous grant from the Thriving Earth Exchange, Portland is getting its very first community garden, and planting day is just around the corner! 🌍💚

📅 Saturday, June 20th at 3:00 PM
📍 Portland Ball Field
🌿 Hands-On Gardening Workshop
🆓 Completely FREE to attend!

🏡 Open to Portland residents

🌱 Registering also reserves you one garden plot for the entire 2026 season — yours to plant, tend, and harvest all summer long!

Plot holders will have access to the garden through October! If you'd like to attend the workshop only and not reserve a plot, simply note that on the registration form.

🥕 We'll have starter vegetables available to choose from on planting day at no cost — or feel free to bring your own seeds and seedlings!

🎥 The garden space will be monitored by security cameras all season long to keep your plot safe and protected.

👶 Kids ages 5 and up are welcome with a parent or guardian!

⚠️ Spots are limited to 12, so please only register if you plan to attend. Form will be disabled once we reach our limit. If your plans change, please let us know so a neighbor on the waitlist can take your spot!
